New Mexico State forward Robert Carpenter was ejected from the game after throwing a punch at Liberty forward Shiloh Robinson during their intense matchup. The incident occurred in the first quarter of the Aggies’ thrilling 79-73 home overtime victory. The altercation took place in the paint, where both players were battling for position. As the play shifted away, Robinson made contact with Carpenter, prompting the aggressive response. Carpenter unleashed a forceful blow, sending Robinson crashing to the court. Unfortunately, Robinson was unable to return to the game following the incident.

Aggies head coach Jason Hooten, though he had not yet reviewed the footage, anticipates that Carpenter will face a suspension from Conference USA. Hooten emphasized that regardless of the circumstances leading up to the punch, such behavior is not acceptable at New Mexico State University. He expressed his remorse to Liberty’s head coach Ritchie McKay for the incident.

Carpenter, who typically contributes an average of 10.2 points and 4.1 rebounds per game, will be benched for New Mexico’s upcoming match, regardless of any potential suspension. Hooten firmly stated that Carpenter will not be playing on Saturday. Despite acknowledging Carpenter’s positive character, Hooten emphasized that there is absolutely no tolerance for such actions in the game.

Carpenter, a 6-foot-7 junior, joined NMSU after transferring from Mississippi Valley State. The Aggies currently hold a 10-12 record, securing a respectable third place in CUSA.
