After months of swirling rumors and speculation, Carlos Sainz has officially signed with Williams for the 2025 Formula 1 season, marking a significant shift in his career. The Spaniard had been linked with several top teams, including Audi, Mercedes, Red Bull Racing, and Alpine, but ultimately decided to join Williams, a team currently battling at the back of the grid.
Speaking ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, Sainz explained his decision-making process, emphasizing that while he explored every competitive option, the paths to joining a top team were either blocked or required a long wait. “I obviously analyzed every possible option in the market, especially the most competitive ones,” Sainz said. “But I understood that I either had to wait very long or there was not a strong possibility.”
Sainz revealed that he engaged in serious discussions with Red Bull and Mercedes but ultimately decided to take control of his own destiny rather than wait on uncertain opportunities. “As soon as I understood that I would either have to wait quite long or depend on others to make that happen, I wanted to be the boss of my own destiny and I took that decision of going to Williams,” he explained. Sainz credited Williams Team Principal James Vowles for convincing him with a clear and compelling vision for the future of the team.
The decision to join Williams was made just after the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa, allowing Sainz to enjoy a stress-free summer break with his future secured. “Around the Spa weekend, I wanted to make the decision because I wanted to go into the summer break with a very clear situation in my head,” Sainz noted. “Williams gave me the trust and belief. I believe in that and feel really encouraged by the project there, and really motivated to see a team that wanted me so much.”
Addressing rumors of an exit clause in his contract should a top team come calling, Sainz remained firm in his commitment to Williams. “I am fully committed to Williams for the future – and that whatever there is in my contract is nothing to discuss,” he said, putting to rest any doubts about his dedication to the team.
Since joining Ferrari in 2021, Sainz has proven himself as a formidable driver, securing three Grand Prix victories and five pole positions. As he embarks on this new chapter with Williams, Sainz is determined to help the team climb the grid and reestablish itself as a competitive force in Formula 1. Currently fifth in the 2024 Drivers’ Championship, Sainz has his sights set on making a significant impact with his new team.
