Charles Leclerc has lifted the curtain on the rollercoaster of emotions that defined his relationship with Carlos Sainz during their tenure as Ferrari teammates. While the duo’s on-track battles have fueled rumors of a fierce rivalry, Leclerc paints a picture that’s far more complex, admitting that there were moments when their competitive spirit led them to “hate each other.”

As the clock ticks down on Sainz’s time at Ferrari—he’s set to join Williams in 2025—Leclerc reflects on the highs and lows of their partnership. Despite their intense rivalry, Leclerc is quick to express his sadness over Sainz’s impending departure, emphasizing that he’ll miss Sainz not just as a teammate, but as a friend. Their off-track camaraderie, built on mutual respect and shared interests, stood strong even as they clashed in the heat of competition.

Leclerc doesn’t shy away from admitting that the pressure cooker environment of Formula 1 often brought out the worst in both drivers. With helmets on and engines roaring, disagreements on the track occasionally left them fuming, fueling the narrative that they were at odds. But according to Leclerc, these tensions evaporated as soon as the race was over. The duo would sit down, talk things through, and clear the air—showing that their friendship was resilient enough to withstand the strain of the sport’s relentless demands.

In a sport where relationships are scrutinized and dissected by fans and pundits alike, Leclerc believes that he and Sainz managed to maintain a strong bond, largely unaffected by the noise. He credits his own personality for helping to keep things cordial, noting that he’s never had a bad relationship with any of his teammates, past or present.

Leclerc also touched on the many memorable moments he and Sainz shared, moments he believes will stick with him long after their partnership ends. As the 2024 season heads into its final 10 rounds, fans are watching closely, hoping that both drivers can deliver strong performances before Sainz bids farewell to the Prancing Horse.

In the end, while the on-track rivalry between Leclerc and Sainz may have been intense, the respect and friendship they share off the track stand as a testament to their professionalism. As Leclerc says goodbye to his teammate, it’s clear that the memories—and perhaps a few bruised egos—will remain long after Sainz moves on.
