Toto Wolff Admits Mercedes Still Have a Long Road to Dominate F1 Again

Mercedes may have clawed back some pride in the 2024 F1 season after two lackluster years, but team boss Toto Wolff isn’t ready to pop the champagne just yet. While the Silver Arrows have managed to turn their fortunes around in recent races, Wolff insists there’s still plenty of work to be done if they want to be in the fight for victory at every race weekend.

As the sport gears up to return from its summer hiatus, Wolff is urging caution despite the momentum Mercedes gained before the break. The W15 has shown promising pace, and with three wins under their belt, Mercedes is the only team aside from Red Bull to have secured multiple victories this season. But the Austrian mastermind behind the Brackley-based squad knows that’s not enough.

Wolff acknowledges that while the team has made significant strides, they’re still not where they need to be. The competition is fierce, and Mercedes remains just shy of being a constant threat at the front of the grid. The message from Wolff is clear: there’s no room for complacency if they want to close the gap to their rivals.

With the summer break now over, all eyes turn to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix, Max Verstappen’s home turf. The passionate ‘Orange Army’ is set to pack the grandstands, creating the kind of electric atmosphere that Wolff believes is the perfect stage for F1’s return. It’s a tough battleground, but Wolff is optimistic that Mercedes can put up a strong fight.

Still, Wolff knows that optimism alone won’t win races. The Silver Arrows need to keep pushing, refining their car, and finding those crucial extra tenths if they want to dethrone Red Bull and fend off the resurgent McLaren. For now, fans can only hope that Mercedes can pull off a shock win in Verstappen’s backyard and continue their upward trajectory in the second half of the season.
