The Kansas City Chiefs have a surprising ally as they head into the Super Bowl in Las Vegas – none other than Taylor Swift herself. But that’s not the only good omen they have on their side. Rumor has it that there is something buried beneath the turf at Allegiant Stadium that could bring luck to the Chiefs. Or at least, that’s what they thought.

Recently, an old story from 2017 resurfaced on social media. It was about the construction of the stadium that will host Super Bowl XLIII later this month. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a construction worker named Gerard DeCosta supposedly buried a Chiefs flag underneath the stadium seven years ago.

The story gained traction when a Chiefs fan named Chris Scherzer posted a photo on Facebook showing DeCosta with the Chiefs banner. The inscription on the flag read “Chiefs Kingdom.” The caption of the photo read, “Flag buried in dirt, encased in concrete, with a stadium built on top of it. Chiefs 1, Raiders 0. Las Vegas.”

DeCosta even shared the same photo on his Twitter account after the Chiefs defeated the Raiders in 2020. The photo eventually caught the attention of Mark Badain, who was the Raiders president at the time. Badain wanted to get to the bottom of the story, so he reached out to Tommy White, the local labor union leader who supervised the stadium’s construction.

The story quickly made DeCosta a legend among Chiefs fans and a villain among Raiders fans. However, it turns out that the whole story is nothing more than fiction. Fox 59 news decided to investigate the matter with the Super Bowl just around the corner. They tracked down Tommy White to confirm or debunk DeCosta’s claim.

White held up the exact same ‘Chiefs Kingdom’ flag seen in DeCosta’s photo and revealed the truth. “He just told me the full story about it,” White said, holding up the flag. “This is his flag. It’s never been buried.”

So, it seems like the Chiefs won’t have the luck of a buried flag on their side as they face off against their opponents in the Super Bowl. But who knows, maybe they’ll find luck in other ways. As for DeCosta, he may not have a buried flag, but he certainly has a place in the hearts of Chiefs fans. And as for Mark, well, when he’s not covering all the major sports, he’s probably out on the golf course honing his skills.
