BMW Issues Massive Recall for Over 720,000 Vehicles Due to Fire Risk from Faulty Water Pump

In a move that has rocked the automotive world, BMW has announced one of the largest recalls of 2024, targeting a staggering 720,796 vehicles across various model lines due to a significant fire risk. The issue stems from a potential short circuit in an electrical plug connected to the water pump, which could result in a devastating engine fire.

The recall, listed under NHTSA recall number 24V-608, affects a broad range of BMW vehicles produced between 2012 and 2018. Models impacted include popular choices such as the BMW X1, Z4, 328i, X5, and others. The recall was initiated following a series of investigations that began after BMW received reports of a “thermal event” in January on an unspecified vehicle in the United States. This incident, and others that followed, led to an in-depth analysis of the water pump and its associated electric plug.

BMW’s investigation uncovered that, in rare instances, fluid from the intake air hose could seep into the plug, causing a short circuit. This dangerous malfunction has been identified in multiple vehicles, with BMW documenting at least 18 cases of complaints or damage resulting from the issue. Fortunately, no injuries or accidents have been reported.

The affected vehicles span a wide range of BMW’s lineup, including:

  • BMW X1 sDrive28i / xDrive28i (2012-2015)
  • BMW Z4 sDrive28i (2012-2016)
  • BMW 528i / 528i xDrive (2012-2016)
  • BMW 328i / 328xi (2012-2016)
  • BMW X5 xDrive 40e (2016-2018)
  • BMW 228i / 228xi (2014-2016)
  • BMW 428i / 428i xDrive (2014-2016)
  • BMW 328xi Gran Turismo (2014-2016)
  • BMW X3 sDrive28i / xDrive28i (2013-2017)
  • BMW X4 xDrive28i (2013-2017)
  • BMW 428xi (2015-2016)

The fix for this potentially hazardous issue is straightforward: BMW will inspect the water pump and the problematic plug and replace any damaged components. Additionally, a protective shield will be installed to prevent fluid from reaching the plug in the future.

Dealer notifications for the recall have already begun, and BMW owners are urged to schedule inspections and repairs as soon as possible to avoid any risk of fire.

This recall serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vehicle safety and the potential consequences when critical components fail. BMW’s proactive approach in addressing the issue is commendable, but the scope of the recall underscores the significant risk posed by even seemingly minor faults.
