Aston Martin Under “Huge Pressure” as 2024 Season Falters, Says Team Boss Mike Krack

Aston Martin seems to get a agreement with Newey for F1, and also aims for Verstappen

Aston Martin’s 2024 Formula 1 campaign has been marred by setbacks and struggles, leaving the team unable to replicate the success it enjoyed in 2023. Team Principal Mike Krack has admitted that the Silverstone-based outfit is under “huge pressure” to deliver results after a season that has seen them fall behind key rivals.

Last year, Aston Martin emerged as the closest challenger to Red Bull, securing six podiums in the first eight races. However, this season has seen the team drop behind Mercedes, Ferrari, and a resurgent McLaren, with only two podium finishes in the last 14 rounds. Hopes that a significant upgrade package at Imola would boost performance have not materialized, with the new parts making the AMR24 harder to drive and contributing to the team’s slide towards the midfield.

Krack emphasized that Aston Martin’s 2023 performance should be viewed in the context of other teams underperforming while they overperformed. Despite this, he acknowledged that the ongoing development issues have heightened expectations and pressure to recover quickly.

Speaking to Autosport, Krack said, “When you bring upgrades and they are not delivering the performance that they should, then the pressure is increasing and rightly so. The perception from outside is not wrong. The pressure inside is huge because [the upgrade] doesn’t deliver what you expected, and trying to solve this as quickly as possible is now the aim.”

The team’s struggles have sparked speculation about billionaire owner Lawrence Stroll’s potential response, with rumors suggesting he could lose patience and make changes to turn the team’s fortunes around. However, Krack remains confident that Stroll understands the long-term nature of Aston Martin’s Formula 1 project, despite the current challenges.

“We started the season in fifth, wanted to get closer, had a plan to get closer to the top cars, and have not delivered that,” Krack admitted. As Aston Martin works to address its performance issues, the team knows it must act quickly to avoid slipping further down the grid.
