Sébastien Ogier Triumphs as Oliver Solberg’s Ambitions Crumble in Dramatic Rally Islas Canarias
In a heart-stopping showdown at the Rally Islas Canarias, Sébastien Ogier emerged victorious, leaving fans and competitors alike reeling from the shocking twist that altered the course of the race. Just when it seemed like Oliver Solberg was closing in on Ogier’s lead, fate took a cruel turn.
As the two drivers fought tooth and nail, Solberg was relentlessly chipping away at Ogier's lead, narrowing the gap to a mere 2.2 seconds with only two stages remaining. But in a moment of high stakes drama, Solberg misjudged a jump, veered off course, and collided with an Armco barrier, ultimately ripping a wheel off his GR Yaris and forcing him to retire.
Ogier, now free from the clutches of his fierce rival, cruised to a majestic 19.9-second victory over his teammate Elfyn Evans, solidifying Toyota’s dominance with a stunning 1-2-3-4 finish. “It’s been a super weekend for the whole team,” Ogier exclaimed, expressing gratitude to Toyota for providing him with an exceptional car. “The intensity in the stages against my team-mates was something, you know, we really wanted to see when we come in a rally car. And yeah, of course, I’m happy to come out as the winner.”
Yet, the seasoned champion couldn’t shake the feeling that Solberg’s exit robbed them both of a memorable battle. “In the same time, I would have loved to share the podium with Oliver. I’m pretty sure it would have been a close call,” Ogier reflected. “That’s a tough part of our sport. It can turn in the wrong direction very quickly.” He added words of encouragement for the young driver, stating, “He’s still very young and I’m sure we’ll have some more battles together.”
Ogier’s calm under pressure was palpable throughout the event. Despite the tightening competition, he maintained his poise, admitting, “The pressure was there, it’s always there, but that’s part of the game. And that’s one of the parts I love.” With every stage, the tension mounted, but Ogier’s strategy remained clear: take risks only when necessary. “There was still a possibility to go a little faster, but you had to increase the risk level. And yeah, that’s never really my approach to rallying.”
As the dust settled on the Rally Islas Canarias, Toyota's clean sweep of all 17 stages was a testament to their relentless commitment to excellence. Deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen expressed surprise at the magnitude of their advantage over rival Hyundai, stating, “I thought they would be much closer. Last year we did the same: we were first, second, third and fourth, so I thought they would have improved. But we did good work, did a good test, and we managed to get all the setup right.”
The echoes of this electrifying rally will resonate for weeks to come, as fans and analysts alike speculate on what could have been had Solberg not met with such misfortune. But one thing is crystal clear: the rivalry between Ogier and Solberg is far from over, and the world of rally racing is on the edge of its seat for their next encounter.
