Damon Hill says Lewis Hamilton reacted maturely to Lando Norris’ incident after Hungarian Grand Prix.

Damon Hill recently highlighted the shifting dynamics within McLaren, noting that Lando Norris is no longer the only driver consistently scoring points for the team, thanks to Oscar Piastri’s impressive performances. This evolution has introduced a new layer of competition within the team, potentially affecting Norris’s driving as he faces pressure from his rapidly improving teammate.

In a recent podcast, Tom Clarkson brought up the incident at the Hungarian Grand Prix, where in the closing laps, Norris was instructed to let Piastri pass. Piastri had led the race from the start, but a pit stop strategy briefly handed the advantage to Norris. This incident sparked a discussion among F1 pundits about whether Norris is feeling the heat from Piastri, particularly in light of recent mistakes Norris made in Belgium.

Clarkson speculated that the pressure of competing with a strong teammate like Piastri could be a factor in Norris’s recent errors. He questioned whether the emergence of Piastri as a formidable competitor within the team might be causing Norris to push harder, leading to mistakes.

Responding to this, Damon Hill agreed that there might be some truth to Clarkson’s observation. Hill explained that Norris, who had been McLaren’s standout driver, was crucial in delivering impressive results and energizing the team. However, with Piastri’s arrival and his subsequent success—including his first win of the season—there’s a new, strong competitor within McLaren. Hill suggested that Norris might indeed be feeling the pressure of no longer being the sole key driver, which could be influencing his performance.

Hill went on to praise Piastri’s development, describing him as a steady learner who is progressively getting better and stronger. The Hungarian Grand Prix victory, according to Hill, was a major turning point for Piastri. It significantly boosted the young Australian’s confidence and self-belief, which subsequently reflected in his strong performance in Belgium. This newfound confidence not only enhanced Piastri’s driving but also positively impacted the morale within McLaren.

The combined efforts of Piastri and Norris have given McLaren a substantial boost in the Constructors’ Championship, where they currently sit second, trailing Red Bull by 42 points. With 10 races remaining in the season, fans are hopeful that McLaren can close the gap and potentially challenge Red Bull for the top spot in the championship standings.

Hill’s insights underscore the growing competition within McLaren, where both drivers are pushing each other to new heights, making the team a formidable force on the grid. This internal rivalry could be crucial as McLaren continues its push to challenge Red Bull’s dominance in the remaining races of the season.
