As the 2024 Formula 1 season progresses, Max Verstappen has dominated with seven wins out of the first ten races, but the last four before the summer break proved challenging for Red Bull, with significant improvements from McLaren and Mercedes creating tougher competition. Critics have speculated that Verstappen’s exceptional driving might be masking the RB20’s true performance, suggesting that the car may not be as superior as it seems. However, Red Bull’s chief engineer, Paul Monaghan, has refuted these claims.

In a recent interview, Monaghan addressed the ongoing efforts to enhance the RB20’s performance, using last season’s success as a benchmark. He explained that Red Bull’s goal has always been to build and maintain a speed advantage on every track, but acknowledged that the increasing competition throughout the season has made it difficult to sustain that edge. Despite the challenges, Monaghan emphasized that Verstappen’s performance is authentic and not an illusion of a superior car. He believes that the Dutch driver is pushing the car hard because the competition has caught up, not because the RB20 is underperforming.

Monaghan also touched on the struggles of Sergio Perez, who faced mounting pressure after a series of disappointing performances, particularly after crashing out in Q1 at the Hungarian Grand Prix. However, Perez’s strong showing in Belgium, where he delivered an impressive qualifying result, brought a sense of relief and pride to the team. Monaghan noted that during the debrief, Perez appeared more confident and self-assured, which was a positive sign for the team as they head into the second half of the season.

The speculation around Perez’s future had intensified, with talks of a possible replacement due to his inconsistent performances. However, his rebound in Belgium demonstrated his resilience and capability under pressure, much to the satisfaction of Monaghan and the Red Bull team.

In summary, Paul Monaghan stands by the genuine performance of both Verstappen and the RB20, attributing any struggles to the natural progression of competition rather than a decline in the car’s capabilities. He also expressed confidence in Perez’s ability to overcome challenges and continue contributing to the team’s success.
