McLaughlin Stakes His Claim as a Top Contender with Blistering Qualifying Lap at Gateway

Scott McLaughlin continues to solidify his reputation as a formidable force on oval tracks, taking the pole position for Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology Raceway. In scorching conditions, with the track surface reaching a sweltering 126 degrees Fahrenheit, McLaughlin clocked a combined lap time of 50.0079 seconds, averaging 179.972 MPH in his Team Penske Chevrolet.

McLaughlin, who started 10th and finished 5th at Gateway last year, will be looking to capitalize on his strong starting position to secure his second oval victory, following his breakthrough win at Iowa earlier this season.

Felix Rosenqvist initially held the provisional pole but was bumped to second place by McLaughlin’s blistering lap. However, due to a nine-place grid penalty for exceeding his engine allocation, Rosenqvist will start from 10th. His Meyer Shank Racing teammate, David Malukas, nearly matched Rosenqvist’s pace and will start alongside McLaughlin on the front row after the penalties are applied.

Team Penske’s dominance was further highlighted by Josef Newgarden and Will Power, who secured the fourth and fifth fastest times, respectively, ensuring the first few rows will be a battle between Penske and Meyer Shank Racing.

Championship leader Alex Palou qualified seventh but will drop to 16th due to his own grid penalty. Intriguingly, this mirrors the starting position of Scott Dixon last year when he won this race, adding an extra layer of anticipation to Palou’s challenge on race day.

Colton Herta’s qualifying session took a dramatic turn when he lost control in Turn 1 during his second lap, resulting in a crash into the SAFER barrier. Herta acknowledged the team’s setup was just a bit too aggressive and will aim for a strong recovery in the race.

Katherine Legge was unable to make a qualifying attempt as her car failed inspection. The Dale Coyne Racing team will regroup in time for the final practice session before Saturday’s 260-lap showdown.

As the field gears up for the race, McLaughlin’s pole position and the strategic battles shaping up across the grid promise an intense and thrilling contest at Gateway.
