Kyle Larson Declares Himself a Better “All-Around Driver” Than Max Verstappen

2021 NASCAR Cup Series Champion Kyle Larson has boldly claimed that he is a better “all-around driver” than reigning three-time Formula 1 World Champion Max Verstappen. Larson, who is widely regarded as one of the most talented racing drivers in the United States, made the statement following his recent victory at the Knoxville Nationals, where he secured his third title in the prestigious dirt Sprint Car race.

Larson’s confidence stems from his versatility across multiple racing disciplines. The 31-year-old has won 27 NASCAR Cup Series races and a championship, but his achievements extend beyond NASCAR. He competed in the 2024 Indy 500, finishing 18th, and later raced in the NASCAR Coca-Cola 600 on the same weekend. He also won the 2015 Daytona 24 Hours and has demonstrated his prowess in dirt racing, adding to his impressive résumé.

In an interview with FloRacing, Larson confidently stated, “I know in my mind I am better than him [Verstappen] as an all-around driver. There’s no way Verstappen can get into a Sprint Car and win the Knoxville Nationals. There’s no way he can go win the Chili Bowl. There’s no way he can go win a Cup race at Bristol.”

Larson acknowledged Verstappen’s dominance in Formula 1 but argued that his own adaptability across different types of racing gives him the edge. “There’s probably no way I can go win a Formula 1 race at Monaco, but I think I’d have a better shot doing what he does than him doing what I do just because of the car element,” Larson added. “That’s what gives me ease and confidence that, like, I know I’m better than him. Maybe not in an open-wheel IndyCar or Formula 1 car, but that’s one discipline. I think I would beat him in everything else.”

Max Verstappen, who recently claimed his third consecutive win in Barcelona and the 61st victory of his F1 career, is often regarded as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history. The Dutchman, who became the youngest-ever race winner in F1 at just 18 years old, has dominated the sport in recent years with record-breaking performances.

While Verstappen’s career has been primarily focused on single-seaters, he has ventured into other disciplines through sim-racing, notably winning the iRacing Daytona 24 Hours event. A direct comparison between the two drivers on equal terms would be an intriguing prospect. Although unlikely, a crossover event where Verstappen competes in NASCAR, similar to the appearances made by former F1 drivers Kimi Raikkonen, Kamui Kobayashi, and Jenson Button, would undoubtedly captivate motorsport fans.

Larson’s comments have sparked a fascinating debate about the versatility of racing drivers across different disciplines, highlighting the unique challenges and skills required to excel in various forms of motorsport.
