Andretti-Cadillac Eyes Potential Acquisition of Renault Power Unit Program to Boost F1 Entry Bid

The Andretti name is synonymous with motorsport excellence, but despite its storied legacy, the Andretti-Cadillac F1 bid has faced significant hurdles in securing a place on the Formula 1 grid as the 11th team. However, recent reports suggest that Renault could play a pivotal role in strengthening the American team’s prospects.

Originally, Andretti had a deal with Renault for power units for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, with the intention of transitioning to engines developed by Cadillac’s parent company, General Motors, from 2028 onwards. However, Renault is set to withdraw from producing its own power units in 2026, with Alpine likely to switch to a customer supply, potentially from Mercedes.

In light of this development, rumors have surfaced that Michael Andretti’s team could acquire the partially developed Renault 2026 power unit. Such a move would give Andretti-Cadillac a significant head start in engine development and could save substantial resources. Moreover, possessing a ready-made power unit program could strengthen the American team’s case to join F1, particularly after being previously rejected by Formula One Management (FOM).

Alpine, the current face of Renault’s F1 operations, has undergone considerable upheaval in recent years. The team has seen the departure of key figures like Otmar Szafnauer and Alan Permane, and the arrival of Flavio Briatore has led to further changes, including Bruno Famin stepping down from his team principal role. The latest development sees Oliver Oakes, formerly of Hitech GP, taking over day-to-day operations at Alpine.

Oakes’s presence at Alpine is intriguing, given his previous attempt to bring Hitech GP into F1 as an 11th team, an effort that failed to gain FIA approval. His new role could potentially pave the way for a future takeover of the Alpine squad, especially if Renault decides to exit F1 entirely by 2026.

Although Alpine has publicly stated that the team is not for sale, recent actions and restructuring suggest that Renault may be preparing to exit the sport within the next two years. Should that happen, a takeover by Andretti-Cadillac could become a reality, providing the American team with a solid platform to enter F1 and take the team to new heights.

As the situation unfolds, fans and industry insiders alike will be watching closely to see if Andretti-Cadillac can capitalize on this potential opportunity, finally securing their place on the Formula 1 grid and continuing the Andretti legacy in the world’s most prestigious motorsport.
