A fresh wind tunnel provides Aston Martin F1 with crucial adaptability

Lance Stroll, Aston Martin AMR24

Fallows, the Technical Director of Aston Martin, has expressed the significance of the team’s upcoming wind tunnel in achieving their goals. He believes that the new facility, set to be operational later this year, will provide them with greater flexibility and is a crucial step for the team’s aspirations. Since Lawrence Stroll, the owner of Aston Martin, took over the team in 2021, he has been investing a substantial amount of his wealth into transforming the team. His aim is to elevate them from being a midfield competitor to a contender for world championships.

A major part of this transformation involves the construction of a new facility at Aston Martin’s Silverstone site. This three-building complex will house a state-of-the-art simulator and the much-anticipated wind tunnel. These new tools will play a pivotal role in Aston Martin’s development of their Formula 1 car for the 2026 season.

Fallows eagerly anticipates the implementation of these new resources. He recognizes the significant improvements they will bring to the team. With their own aerodynamic testing facility, Aston Martin will no longer have to rely on Mercedes’ wind tunnel in Brackley. This newfound independence will provide them with the flexibility needed to enhance their car development process.

“It provides us with a greater capacity to conduct our own testing according to our preferences, offering us a higher level of flexibility compared to our current situation,” he stated.

“We have encountered numerous instances where we desired to undertake certain activities but were unable to do so. The significant financial investment we have made in the new Aston Martin factory and its accompanying facilities will complement several other crucial decisions made by Stroll during his ownership.”

Fallows has played a pivotal role in an extensive recruitment campaign targeting key personnel, which has recently intensified in 2024.

Enrico Cardile, former Chassis Technical Director at Ferrari, will assume the position of Aston’s Chief Technical Officer at the commencement of the 2025 season. Additionally, Andy Cowell, the former Managing Director at Mercedes AMG HPP, will take on the role of the team’s Group Chief Executive Officer in October.

These appointments may be further reinforced by Aston Martin reportedly leading the race to secure the services of outgoing Red Bull design expert Adrian Newey.

Furthermore, in 2026, Aston Martin will form a partnership with Honda to establish a full works entry, resulting in the termination of its technical collaboration with Mercedes, which involved the utilization of the Silver Arrows’ power unit, gearbox, and rear suspension.

All the necessary elements are falling into place for Aston Martin to become a strong contender in 2026, and the newly acquired wind tunnel is just one component of the intricate puzzle that Fallows believes contributes to the team’s “ambitions.”

He expressed, “It is of utmost importance for a team with our aspirations to equip ourselves with the necessary tools to transition into the next phase. Therefore, I am incredibly enthusiastic about gaining access to the wind tunnel.”
