Jimmie Johnson senses similarity to Dale Earnhardt Sr. in Austin Dillon’s contentious victory at Richmond

The No.3 car has always been an emblematic number in NASCAR. The No.3 Chevrolet was famously driven by a NASCAR Hall of Famer in the past. However, his driving style often sparked debates even after the race had concluded. A similar incident occurred with the No.3 Chevy at Richmond, where Dillon controversially secured the Cook 400 victory by causing two opponents to crash. This drew comparisons between the two drivers.

A renowned seven-time Cup Series champion, Dillon shares the top spot with two other competitors. At 48 years old, he has heard legendary stories about his fellow racers and has witnessed Earnhardt’s racing skills during his early career. However, as he has now taken on a part-time role in racing, he offered his perspective on the thrilling finish at Richmond.

Dillon won the race by causing crashes involving two drivers, ultimately crossing the finish line ahead of them. This triggered a significant outcry for his demotion. Nevertheless, the former Cup Series champion responded to the situation with just three words, supporting Dillon and alluding to how similar incidents were overlooked in the past, reminding him of Earnhardt Sr.

Sometimes, crossing the finish line does not guarantee a victory for the driver. Furthermore, numerous drivers have faced disqualification or penalties after winning a race on the track, something Hamlin is well aware of. Conversely, the 34-year-old’s win could face a similar fate if the stewards rule against him.

Similarly, Dillon’s maneuver has faced public criticism from multiple experts. The Vice President of NASCAR emphasized that although the sport is known for its physicality, unfair victories will not be tolerated. The 34-year-old’s actions were deemed to be on the brink of being considered a racing incident or an intentional one.

NASCAR’s Elton Sawyer stated, “Our sport has always involved physical contact. We often question where the line is and whether someone has crossed it. I would say that on the final lap, it was dangerously close to that line. We will thoroughly examine all available resources, including audio and video…”

While NASCAR initially deemed Dillon’s win as fair, subsequent meetings will be held among officials. As a result, JGR’s Hamlin could potentially be awarded the victory if officials decide to overturn the initial ruling. The final decision on the outcome of the race is expected to be reached by Tuesday.
