Volkswagen is completely transforming the meaning of the name Jetta — at least in China. What is a compact, affordable sedan in the West has become an independent brand in the world's largest automotive market… and is now preparing to enter the electric era with a surprising SUV.
Jetta ceases to be a model and establishes itself as a brand
In China, the name Jetta has been functioning since 2019 as a sub-brand of the Volkswagen Group, focused on affordable vehicles. It is in this context that the new Jetta X emerges, a concept that anticipates the brand's electric future.
An electric SUV with off-road attitude
The Jetta X stands out for its robust and modern design, with a clearly adventurous style:
- narrow LED headlights integrated into a continuous front strip
- bumpers with lower protection and red tow hooks
- pronounced wheel arches with plastic protection
- rear with a light signature inspired by the front
The ensemble conveys a solid and functional image, with references to the off-road universe.
Minimalist and digital interior
As is customary with the latest concept cars, the interior focuses on a clean and technological approach:
- few physical controls
- large screens
- focus on the digital experience
Electric strategy already defined
Volkswagen confirms that the Jetta brand will launch four “NEV” models by 2028, including electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles.
The Jetta X is expected to give rise to the first model of this new phase, with a launch planned for this year.
China sets the pace for innovation
This project reflects the speed at which the Chinese market evolves, where new models quickly transition from concept to production.
Despite this, all indications are that this SUV will not reach the United States or Europe, remaining an exclusive offering for the Chinese market.
Volkswagen presents more news in Beijing
In addition to the Jetta X, the Volkswagen Group revealed other electric models:
- ID. Unyx 09 – sedan developed with JAC, featuring a futuristic design and advanced assistance systems
- ID. Aura T6 – electric SUV created with FAW, with a more traditional design and OTA updates
A laboratory for the future of the brand
China continues to be the main testing ground for European manufacturers, allowing them to test new ideas, technologies, and market positions.
An unrecognizable — and strategic — Jetta
The Jetta X shows how Volkswagen is adapting historic names to new realities, creating completely different proposals depending on the market.
In this case, the result is a robust electric SUV that has little in common with the sedan known in the West — but it could be a clear sign of the future of accessible mobility.
