Alpine close to being sold

French automaker Renault appears to be preparing to offload the Alpine F1 team after deciding to discontinue its engine program. Alpine is one of the four teams on the current grid that constructs its own power units. However, this will change by 2026 as Renault’s parent company has made the call to shut down its power units program entirely.

This decision came shortly after the return of the mastermind behind the Crashgate scandal to the Enstone team. The Renault Chief Executive Officer brought in Briatore as an Executive Advisor, signaling that the Renault bosses were reassessing the position of the F1 team following a disastrous start to the 2024 season.

Previously, Renault sold a 24% stake in the team to a group of investors, which included the well-known Hollywood star. Now, it appears that the French automaker is preparing for a complete sale of its team prior to the start of the 2026 regulations.

Formula 1 serves as a powerful marketing tool for car manufacturers. The exposure provided by the pinnacle of motorsport is unparalleled, particularly with F1’s significant surge in popularity in recent years. However, Renault has failed to capitalize on these commercial benefits despite focusing solely on its Alpine brand with the Enstone-based team.

On-track, the French team has failed to meet expectations, leading to frequent changes in management within the team. Renault appears to be growing impatient as it gradually reduces its involvement with the power units division.

The arrival of the former boss of Hitech adds to speculation that Hitech GP could be interested in acquiring the team. Other potential suitors may also emerge. However, it is important to note that Flavio Briatore has denied any claims of an imminent sale of Alpine.

Nevertheless, all indications suggest that Alpine will soon be sold to the highest bidder. The current F1 market favors sellers, allowing Renault to wait for the right offer. Nonetheless, it would be disheartening to see the French giant abandon its endeavors in the pinnacle of motorsport.
