Maloney eager for additional opportunities following RLL IndyCar evaluation

Zane Maloney recently completed his inaugural NTT IndyCar Series test and is eager for more opportunities in the future. Currently ranked fourth in the F2 championship, with two wins and six podium finishes under his belt, Maloney is strategically planning his career path beyond the conclusion of the F2 season. He has had promising discussions with multiple IndyCar teams and recently participated in a test session with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing on August 1st. During the test, which took place at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on its road course, Maloney had the chance to drive approximately 100 laps in an RLL Dallara DW12-Honda car, despite the mixed weather conditions.

As the sole car on the track, Maloney did not have the advantage of comparing his performance to other drivers in the hybrid IndyCar. However, he showcased impressive speed and efficiency, which is not surprising considering the success of other Formula 2 drivers who have transitioned to the American open-wheel series, such as Christian Lundgaard, Juri Vips, and reigning champion Theo Pourchaire, all of whom have excelled upon arrival.

Reflecting on his first test, Maloney expressed his satisfaction, stating, “I don’t think it could have gone much better.” He appreciated the warm welcome from the team and their thorough preparation for the test. Despite some interruptions due to rain, he managed to complete valuable laps and gain experience in various conditions. Maloney highlighted the difference in tire behavior between IndyCar and Formula 2, emphasizing the need to adapt to the heavier car’s characteristics. Nevertheless, he quickly felt comfortable and confident, both in dry and wet conditions, and deemed the day a success. He acknowledged that there is always room for improvement, but with more time in an IndyCar, he believes he can further refine his skills.

Maloney noticed many similarities between the Dallara IndyCar and the Dallara F2 2024 car he currently races for Rodin Motorsport. He found the driving style to be quite similar, although he acknowledged that the street circuits in the U.S. present some unique challenges. The main difference he encountered was with the tires, as they behave differently from the Pirellis used in Formula 2. Maloney adapted to the heavier car’s longer stopping and turning times, crediting his experience in Formula 2 for helping him develop the necessary driving style.

Throughout the test, Maloney thoroughly enjoyed pushing himself to the limit with each lap and providing the team with valuable feedback. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to learn and improve, emphasizing the positive takeaways from the day. Looking ahead, Maloney is determined to create opportunities for himself within the IndyCar paddock, as numerous teams are seeking talented drivers to fill vacant seats or elevate their rosters.

While Maloney’s ultimate dream is to compete in Formula 1, he recognizes that there are factors beyond his control. He views IndyCar as an exceptional championship and would be extremely grateful for an opportunity to compete in it. He acknowledges the high level of competition among drivers and teams in IndyCar, emphasizing the diverse range of tracks, including street circuits, ovals, and road courses, which makes the series particularly enticing for drivers. Maloney is excited to continue his journey in IndyCar, exploring available options and remaining open to the possibilities that lie ahead. He is committed to continuous improvement and hopes to forge a successful career in motorsports by collaborating with the best team to maximize his potential.
