MQ-20 Emerges as New Candidate for Adversary Air Surrogate

The U.S. Defense Department has designated two General Atomics MQ-20 Avengers as air-to-air adversary surrogates for fighter pilot training under Project Red 5. This $98 million initiative, managed by the Test Resource Management Center (TRMC), will see the MQ-20s equipped with advanced sensors, data links, and mission systems to simulate enemy aircraft. This effort revives and expands upon the Air Force’s previous Adversary Air-Unmanned Experiment program, canceled in favor of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.

**1. Project Red 5 Details:

  • Funding: $98 million contract.
  • Purpose: Convert MQ-20 Avengers into air-to-air adversary surrogates for pilot training.

**2. Modifications:

  • The MQ-20s will be outfitted with advanced sensors, data links, and mission systems to emulate enemy aircraft effectively.

**3. Historical Context:

  • The project revives the Adversary Air-Unmanned Experiment program, which was previously canceled in favor of the Collaborative Combat Aircraft initiative.

**4. Strategic Importance:

  • Enhances pilot training by providing realistic adversary simulations.
  • Supports the development and refinement of air combat tactics and strategies.

The integration of MQ-20 Avengers as adversary air surrogates represents a significant advancement in training capabilities. By providing realistic simulations of enemy aircraft, the program aims to enhance the readiness and effectiveness of fighter pilots, ensuring they are well-prepared for future combat scenarios.
