África is currently the only permanently inhabited continent without a Formula 1 Grand Prix. Despite the calendar being at a maximum of 24 rounds, there is still talk about the potential return to African lands, specifically to South Africa and Kyalami, which came close to finalizing an agreement last year… but now Zanzibar in Tanzania emerges as a possibility.
The newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport writes that there is a project for a new circuit in Zanzibar, whose ambition is to reach F1 in the future. Giancarlo Fisichella, former driver of the premier category, is involved. Approval for the construction took place in September 2022 and, last November, the lands were officially transferred to the investors – who have Fisichella as a technical consultant.
In any case, a GP in Zanzibar is a distant reality in time. The construction of the circuit is not expected to start before 2025 and the inauguration of the first phase is only expected to take place in 2027 – so it is unlikely to be ready to enter F1 even in the medium term.
