George Russell responds to ‘devastating’ disqualification from Belgian Grand Prix

George Russell’s disqualification at the 2024 Belgian GP was described as “devastating” by the driver himself. Despite crossing the finish line first at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps in his Mercedes car, Russell was found to be underweight, leading to his disqualification. Initially qualifying in sixth place, Russell’s chances of victory seemed slim throughout the race. However, he managed to execute a one-stop strategy that propelled him into contention. Despite successfully fending off his teammate Lewis Hamilton’s advances, Russell’s joy was short-lived as the FIA determined his car was 1.5 kilograms below the minimum weight requirement, resulting in his disqualification.

Russell expressed his disappointment following the disqualification, but also acknowledged the team’s ability to secure victory through Hamilton. He praised his own performance and the team’s strategy, stating that the risk he took in preserving his tires paid off. While disappointed, Russell remained optimistic about the team’s future performance and vowed to come back stronger after the summer break.

The disqualification had significant implications for the race results. McLaren’s Oscar Piastri moved up to second place, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc claimed the final spot on the podium. Red Bull’s Sergio Perez dropped to seventh in the F1 driver standings due to the disqualification.

The issue of Russell’s car weight arose during the post-race inspection. Initially, the car was found to comply with the minimum weight requirement. However, it was later discovered that the fuel had not been completely drained from the vehicle, as indicated in Mercedes’ submitted forms. The car was subsequently drained and weighed twice on FIA scales, both times showing a weight of 796.5 kilograms, below the required minimum. The F1 stewards had no choice but to disqualify Russell and award the victory to Hamilton.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff accepted the disqualification and took responsibility for the mistake. He apologized to Russell while congratulating Hamilton on his deserved win. Wolff acknowledged the need for the team to learn from the incident and vowed to evaluate what went wrong.

In conclusion, George Russell’s disqualification at the 2024 Belgian GP due to his underweight car was a devastating blow for the driver and the team. Despite his strong performance and crossing the finish line first, Russell’s victory was stripped away. The incident highlighted the importance of complying with technical regulations and ensuring proper procedures are followed.
