Impact of Audi’s major leadership shift on Formula 1 driver market

Sauber has enlisted the services of Mattia Binotto to oversee their transition into an Audi works entry in Formula 1. The decision to bring in Binotto as Chief Operating and Chief Technical Officer is part of an internal restructuring aimed at ensuring that the Audi venture progresses at a rapid pace. This move comes after Audi announced the immediate departure of CEO Andreas Seidl and Chief Representative Oliver Hoffman earlier this week. Sauber, the only team on the grid yet to score a single point this season, hopes that Binotto’s appointment will help address the performance issues with their C44 car. The decision to hire Binotto is also seen as a step towards creating a more efficient management structure as Audi prepares to enter F1 in 2026. Sauber Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi emphasized the importance of this decision, highlighting Binotto’s extensive experience in Formula 1 and his proven track record in leading successful projects. The appointment of Binotto is seen as a strong indication of Audi’s commitment to the F1 project and is expected to bring the team up to speed in terms of decision-making and leadership. Overall, this move is considered a significant step forward for Sauber and their partnership with Audi.

Alunni Bravi has indicated that the progress of Audi’s behind-the-scenes work has not been satisfactory, but he believes that Binotto will improve the situation.

“Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to Andreas and Oliver for their assistance in initiating the Formula 1 project,” he stated.

“I would like to thank them for their contributions. Since the Audi takeover, it has become evident that a change in pace is necessary for the F1 project.

“We are aware that there is a significant amount of work ahead of us, but it is crucial that we appoint individuals who can help establish a clear management structure.

“This will enable us to work in a highly integrated manner between Hinwil and Neuburg, as our ultimate goal is to operate as a Formula 1 factory team.

“The appointment of Mattia will further enhance this objective.

“Of course, it is not my place to speculate on the specific backgrounds and reasons behind this decision.

“However, I believe that instead of passing judgment on past actions, we should express our gratitude to Andreas and Oliver and focus on the future and the next steps.

“There is a substantial amount of work ahead of us, and I am confident that with Mattia, we can achieve the targets set by Audi AG and the teams in Hinwil and Neuburg.”

Alunni Bravi clarified that Binotto’s responsibilities will encompass both managing Sauber’s on-track competitiveness and overseeing Audi’s entry as a works manufacturer.

“Each individual has their own unique approach, which goes beyond their profile, background, and personality.

“I have known Mattia for many years through our partnership with Sauber’s former team principal, Frederic Vasseur, and our relationship with Ferrari.

“I believe he is highly competent, with a proven track record, particularly in technical matters.

“The message is clear: he will lead Sauber Motorsport and assume full responsibility for the sporting success of the Audi factory team.

“I am confident that he possesses all the necessary qualities to achieve this goal and guide our organization towards 2026 and beyond.”
