Daniil Kvyat Shocks the Racing World with Stellar Super GT Debut, Snagging Sixth Place!
In a sensational start to his Super GT career, former Formula 1 star Daniil Kvyat has left motorsport fans buzzing after a remarkable sixth-place finish in the GT300 class at the highly anticipated 2026 season opener at the Okayama International Circuit. Piloting the #88 JLOC Lamborghini Huracan GT3 alongside seasoned driver Takashi Kogure, Kvyat’s debut not only captured attention but also showcased his undeniable talent on a brand-new stage.
The buzz surrounding Kvyat’s transition to Super GT had been palpable throughout the winter months. Arriving with limited experience—this was not just his first race in Japan but also his inaugural outing in a GT3 car—expectations were tempered. Yet, Kvyat stepped into the spotlight with a fierce determination, prioritizing learning over lofty goals. “I had set no specific targets,” he admitted, but even with modest aspirations, he made an unforgettable impression.
After a challenging qualifying session where he secured the 14th position in Q2, Kvyat took the reins from Kogure for the second stint of the race. His strategy, which involved a clever decision to change only the rear tires, paid off handsomely as he climbed his way up to seventh place, battling fierce competition behind him. In a thrilling maneuver at the double hairpin, he executed a masterful overtake on the #52 Green Brave Toyota Supra GT300, which was adopting a no-tyre-change strategy, ultimately securing sixth place and thrilling the crowd.
Reflecting on his exhilarating weekend, Kvyat exclaimed, “Very good! I would say I'm quite happy. First of all, with all the teamwork. Everyone was very good, good communication. First qualifying was good, and I reached a good level.” He acknowledged the wealth of experience within his team, stating, “Now, I can work on making the last step.”
Kvyat’s confidence shone through as he recounted his race experience. “I was able to really push hard. We had a good strategy with the team. Good out lap, good first laps after the pit stop, some overtaking. The battle for P6 was very exciting and very difficult because they (Green Brave) were fast on the straight. I had to invent something different,” he said, demonstrating both his tactical acumen and competitive spirit.
Having previously expressed faith in his ability to adapt, Kvyat's performance on debut has him feeling that he is ahead of the curve in his learning process. “A lot of learning because it’s also my first race in a GT car at all,” he remarked. “I learned fast—maybe a bit faster than I expected, which is good, but I prefer it that way, and now we can focus on the details.”
As the spotlight now shifts to the upcoming round at Fuji Speedway, Kvyat faces yet another challenge. When asked about his aspirations for a podium finish in future races, he replied, “I hope so. If we look purely at qualifying, some cars were very fast, so it's not easy to find this gap quickly with just a simple set-up change. But I heard here maybe things can change race to race, different car conditions and so on. We will see; it's all new to me.”
With an eye towards adapting to the unique conditions at Fuji, Kvyat remains focused on his growth. “Of course, I would like to fight as far ahead as possible, but I prefer to take it step by step and do my best in every session,” he concluded, leaving fans eagerly anticipating his next move.
Daniil Kvyat has certainly made waves in his Super GT debut, and as he continues to learn and adapt, the racing world is left to wonder just how far this talented driver can go!
