Nem Lisboa nem Porto. Onde os portugueses perdem mais tempo no trânsito?

According to the latest edition of the TomTom Traffic Index report, based on data collected in over 387 cities from 55 countries across five continents, London is the city with the most chaotic traffic in the world, with the most congested streets and long-lasting traffic jams.

The index compiles information gathered from millions of anonymous navigation systems, smartphones, and multimedia devices installed in vehicles, and classifies them based on the percentage of congestion level, represented by the average additional time experienced by drivers in each city during a trip.

London tops the ranking with an average travel time of 37 minutes and 20 seconds for a 10-kilometer journey in the city center, and even outside peak hours, drivers in London still take about 25 minutes to complete the same journey, which means that traffic jams cost Londoners an average of 12 minutes for every 10 kilometers.

In terms of time lost in traffic, Portugal doesn’t fare so badly. According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2023, Lisbon is the 139th most congested city in the world, with an average travel time of 17 minutes and 30 seconds per 10 kilometers; Porto ranks 204th on the list, with an average time of 15 minutes and 50 seconds to travel 10 km in the city center.

But there is a Portuguese city in the Top 100 most congested cities in the world: Funchal, the capital of the Madeira archipelago, appears in the 52nd position of the ranking, behind Mumbai in India and Leipzig in Germany.

According to TomTom’s calculations, drivers in Funchal spent 201 hours behind the wheel in 2023; 71 hours were spent in stop-and-go traffic jams.
