Volkswagen has taken another step in autonomous mobility by starting road tests of the autonomous ID. Buzz in Los Angeles, in a strategic partnership with Uber that aims to launch commercial services by the end of 2026.
Ongoing tests with expanding fleet
The project is led by the MOIA mobility division, which has already put the first prototypes of the ID. Buzz adapted for autonomous driving into circulation.
The test fleet is expected to exceed 100 vehicles in this initial phase, with plans for significant expansion in the coming years.
During the tests, the vehicles continue to have human operators on board, ready to intervene whenever necessary.

Uber prepares global integration of robotaxis
Uber will be responsible for the commercial operation of the vehicles, positioning itself as a platform that integrates multiple autonomous driving partners.
The company has chosen not to develop its own technology, focusing on collaborations to accelerate the implementation of autonomous mobility services.
Level 4 technology with advanced sensors
The model, designated ID. Buzz AD, integrates level 4 autonomous driving technology developed in partnership with Mobileye.
The system includes:
- 13 cameras
- 9 lidar sensors
- 5 radars
- integration with real-time traffic data
This combination allows for the detection of obstacles, anticipation of movements from other road users, and operation in reduced visibility conditions.
Enhanced safety and redundancy
To meet level 4 requirements, the vehicle includes redundant systems, continuous monitoring of components, and a backup power source, ensuring operation even in the event of a failure.
There is also the possibility of remote intervention by operators.
Interior adapted for urban transport
The ID. Buzz was chosen for this project due to its practical features, such as wide sliding doors and easy accessibility.
The interior has been redesigned to offer greater durability and ease of cleaning, with a lounge-type configuration oriented towards passenger transport.
A project with national ambition
In addition to Los Angeles, Volkswagen and Uber intend to expand the service to other cities in the United States, with the goal of operating thousands of autonomous vehicles.
A decisive step for the mobility of the future
This project represents a significant advancement in the implementation of robotaxi services, bringing autonomous technology closer to large-scale commercial use.
If the tests are successful, the ID. Buzz could become one of the first vehicles to integrate autonomous transport services in a real urban environment.
