Opel GSE Formula E Team Launches with Groundbreaking Signing of Sophia Floersch!

In a stunning move that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, the newly minted Opel GSE Formula E team has officially signed former Formula 3 star Sophia Floersch as its test and development driver. At just 25 years old, Floersch becomes the first driver to be contracted by the German automotive giant as it gears up for its electrifying debut later this year.

After a brief and challenging stint in Indy NXT last spring, where she struggled to find her footing, Floersch has been in discussions with Opel for some time, paving the way for this monumental partnership. Her arrival not only marks a significant step for Opel but also amplifies the presence of female talent in the high-octane world of Formula E. With her addition, the series now boasts four official female development drivers, joining the ranks of Abbi Pulling, Bianca Bustamante, and Nerea Marti, who are already blazing trails with Nissan, Cupra Kiro, and Andretti, respectively.

Floersch is set to make her much-anticipated public debut on April 21 and 22, when the revolutionary Gen4 cars of the all-electric racing series will be unveiled in France. Sources confirm that she will have the opportunity to take her first laps in the Stellantis Gen4 development car at the launch event, positioning the Opel GSE team front and center for Stellantis' showcase. Expect a star-studded event, as Citroen personnel and drivers will also be in attendance!

Opel's team principal, Jorg Schrott, expressed his enthusiasm for the signing, declaring that Opel is “sending a clear signal for the consistent promotion of young talents in electric motorsport.” He emphasized Floersch's invaluable technical feedback and her analytical prowess both on the simulator and the track, stating that these qualities will be essential for the ongoing refinement of the Gen4 package. Schrott added, “Her fresh approach fits perfectly with our ‘OMG! GSE campaign’, showcasing the emotional side of our all-electric high-performance models.”

Despite her promising future, Floersch faced setbacks, including her withdrawal from the Jarama pre-season test in November 2024 following the cancellation of an earlier event in Valencia. She had prepared rigorously in Nissan’s in-house driver-in-the-loop simulator for the test, which would have seen her teaming up with Pulling. Floersch's last full-time racing endeavor was in Formula 3 on the Formula 1 support bill in 2024, where she finished 29th in the drivers' championship, with a top race finish of 11th.

In another thrilling development, speculation swirls around Mitch Evans potentially joining Opel's roster for the upcoming season. After a decade with Jaguar, Evans is now a frontrunner for a seat with the new team, as reports indicate that Opel has extended an enticing offer. If finalized, this could spell the end of Evans’ long-standing relationship with Jaguar by August. Interestingly, Evans has yet to participate in the Jaguar Gen4 test program, leaving the door wide open for new opportunities.

As if that wasn’t enough, the buzz doesn’t stop there! If Evans commits to Opel, the team is eyeing Theo Pourchaire as a likely candidate to partner with him, further solidifying Opel's ambitions in Formula E. Earlier this year, Opel also targeted Jake Dennis, with an offer reportedly on the table for the 2023 champion, but those negotiations cooled when Dennis opted to pursue a long-term deal with Andretti after the Jeddah E-Prix in February.

As the excitement builds around the Opel GSE Formula E team, motorsport fans worldwide are left on the edge of their seats, eagerly anticipating what’s to come. Will Sophia Floersch break barriers and set new records? Can Mitch Evans steer the team towards victory? One thing is for certain—Opel is poised to make a powerful impact on the electrifying world of Formula E!
