The prices of fuels in Portugal are rising again this week, reversing the slight relief recently recorded and reinforcing the upward trend that has marked the beginning of 2026.

Diesel and gasoline rise again

According to industry sources, starting this Monday, prices are expected to increase by up to:

  • +4 cents per liter for diesel
  • +1 cent per liter for gasoline 95

At branded service stations, the increases are also felt, with rises close to 3.2 cents for diesel and 2.6 cents for gasoline.

Prices remain historically high

This new update comes after some of the largest increases ever recorded in Portugal, particularly in March 2026, when diesel prices rose by almost 20 cents in a single week.

The average price of diesel remains above 2 euros per liter, reflecting strong pressure from energy markets.

Portugal among the most expensive countries in Europe

According to recent data from the European Commission, Portugal continues to be among the countries with the most expensive fuels:

  • Gasoline 95: 8th place in the EU,

    • 4.5 cents above the European average
    • 35.9 cents above Spain

  • Diesel: 12th place in the EU,

    • about 29.5 cents above the Spanish price

The Netherlands leads the ranking for the highest prices for both gasoline and diesel.

Government mechanism remains active

It should be noted that the Government maintains an adjustment mechanism for the ISP (Tax on Petroleum Products), which comes into effect when weekly increases exceed 10 cents per liter.

Where to save on fuel

In this scenario, the choice of gas station becomes increasingly relevant, with significant differences between brands and locations.

Gas stations associated with supermarkets generally continue to offer more competitive prices, allowing some savings for consumers.

Upward trend may continue

With energy markets still under pressure, the evolution of fuel prices is expected to remain a central theme in the coming weeks.

For drivers, the impact is clear: refueling is becoming increasingly expensive, and finding the cheapest gas stations can make a difference in the monthly budget.
