Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League has been making headlines recently. The league has seen yet another change in its McLaren IndyCar driver lineup. However, this change is different from the usual rotation of young drivers on the #6 car. This time, it involves a former Formula 1 driver and Indianapolis 500 winner who has made the decision to leave the team at the age of 32.

Alexander Rossi, who had a frustrating stint in Europe after five F1 starts for Manor in 2015, experienced a life-changing moment when he switched to IndyCar and won the Indy 500 in 2016. Since then, he has driven for two of the biggest teams in the series and has caught the attention of others. Despite his recent success with McLaren, including his first podium at Laguna Seca, his departure is not performance-based but rather a “business” decision.

The split between Rossi and McLaren seems to have stemmed from a disagreement over the terms of their deal. McLaren typically offers a confirmed first year with an option for subsequent years. However, it appears that Rossi was not willing to go beyond a certain point, and McLaren was not willing to meet his demands, resulting in their separation. Christian Lundgaard will now take over the #7 car for McLaren.

Looking at the IndyCar landscape, there don’t seem to be many options available for Rossi. Penske, Ganassi, and Andretti are set with their drivers, and McLaren is no longer an option. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan team, which Lundgaard is leaving for McLaren, seems to be the only viable choice for Rossi. While it may not be the ideal seat for him, it offers the best opportunity among the remaining race-winning outfits.

Rossi has expressed his desire to fight for the championship again and to experience the thrill of winning the Indy 500. He sees Rahal as a potential place to achieve these goals. However, it remains to be seen if other opportunities will arise or if younger drivers will be more attractive to teams due to their lower salary demands or shorter contracts.

Despite the uncertainty, Rossi remains optimistic about his future in IndyCar. He has no plans to leave the series and is focused on finding the best opportunity to accomplish his goals. His recent form and experience with different teams and manufacturers have taught him valuable lessons and have prepared him for the challenges ahead.

As Rossi becomes the highest-profile driver on the market for the 2025 season, it will be interesting to see how his story unfolds. While it may be difficult to imagine him finding exactly what he’s looking for, anything is possible in the world of racing.
