David Coulthard expresses worry about Daniel Ricciardo’s unclear fate at Red Bull

Prior to the Austrian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo, the driver for Visa Cash App RB, was the only member of the Red Bull team who had not yet secured a contract for the future beyond 2025. During a segment on Channel 4, sports commentator David Coulthard discussed the thrilling race and specifically highlighted Ricciardo’s performance. Despite finishing in 9th place, Ricciardo managed to earn valuable points for both himself and the team. However, Coulthard expressed his unease regarding the swirling rumors surrounding Ricciardo’s future with the team. There have been reports suggesting that Ricciardo’s seat at Red Bull is in jeopardy, with Liam Lawson potentially taking his place. In order to secure his position beyond the summer break, the 35-year-old driver may need to deliver a series of outstanding performances.

Coulthard openly admitted that the discussions surrounding Ricciardo’s future made him feel uneasy. When asked if Ricciardo’s Formula 1 career was at risk, Coulthard responded by saying that it would be challenging for any team in the pit lane to confidently state that they are positioning themselves as contenders for the world championship or Grand Prix victories based on Ricciardo’s track record at McLaren and his current performance alongside Yuki Tsunoda. Although Ricciardo is highly regarded within the paddock, Coulthard found it uncomfortable to witness these rumors circulating. Coulthard also noted that these rumors seemed to originate from Helmut Marko, the director of young drivers at Red Bull.

Host Gethin Jones inquired whether Coulthard was referring to rumors suggesting that Ricciardo might not complete the season, to which Coulthard confirmed and expressed his discomfort, stating that it is either a commitment or not. Prior to the Austrian Grand Prix, Ricciardo was the sole Red Bull driver without a contract for the future beyond 2025. Yuki Tsunoda, who has outperformed Ricciardo this season, secured a new contract during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. While Max Verstappen remains committed to Red Bull, Sergio Perez’s contract extension is becoming increasingly uncertain due to his poor performance. In any other team, Ricciardo’s position might be secure for the rest of the season. However, Red Bull possesses a talented pool of young drivers, including Liam Lawson. Ricciardo is under pressure as Red Bull would not want to lose Lawson, who has a clause in his contract allowing him to explore other opportunities if he is not offered a race seat. As a result, Ricciardo could be the one left without a seat.
