Russell expresses frustration with ‘messy’ Q3 during qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix.

Russell expressa frustração com ‘bagunçado’ Q3 durante a classificação do GP da Áustria.

Russell conquered third place in the qualifying session for the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday. George Russell, from Mercedes, expressed his disappointment with his last lap in the qualifying session of the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix, describing it as “confusing” and “frustrating”. Despite this, he managed to secure the third best time on Saturday afternoon. Russell led Mercedes’ charge against teams like Ferrari, McLaren, and Red Bull during the qualifying session in Austria. He finished as the best of the rest, behind only Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Russell’s lap time, 1:04.840s, was just over half a second slower than Verstappen’s pole time and just over a tenth of a second behind Norris in second place.

Russell acknowledged that he didn’t have the pace to keep up with the top two drivers, but attributed his slower time to the track conditions during his final lap. He mentioned having to let several drivers pass during his out lap and encountering dust and gravel on the track. Despite these challenges, Russell expressed his satisfaction with finishing in third place. He admitted that the gap to Verstappen was larger than he expected and believed that the two McLarens would be faster than Mercedes in the Grand Prix on Sunday. However, he highlighted Mercedes’ recent improvement and believed that his qualifying result was deserved, especially considering Oscar Piastri’s effort being excluded due to a track limits violation.

It is evident that Mercedes has consistently been faster than Ferrari in the last three Grand Prix weekends, including Montreal and Barcelona. Russell expressed confidence in his and Lewis Hamilton’s ability to beat the Ferrari cars in Sunday’s race. He also expected to disrupt Oscar Piastri’s progress. However, Russell acknowledged the unpredictable nature of the race due to high tire degradation and emphasized that anything could happen.

In the Spanish GP, Russell impressed the crowd with a daring move on the outside of Turn 1, taking him from fourth to first place. However, he did not anticipate a similar event at the Red Bull Ring. Instead, he intended to focus on defending his position and keeping the drivers behind him in the fight for the podium. Russell reflected on the previous race, admitting that he lost time battling with Lando Norris and became too fixated on the drivers ahead of him. This ultimately cost him his position to Lewis Hamilton and nearly to Charles Leclerc as well. He believed that the race ahead would be different and that he needed to change his focus accordingly.
