Norris: An annoying start, just like that.

Norris: Um começo irritante, simples assim.

Norris started the Spanish GP in the first position on the grid after an exceptional lap in Q3 during Saturday’s qualifying session. However, a poor start combined with strong competition from the current Formula 1 champion, Verstappen, and Russell quickly accelerating in the Mercedes meant that he spent the entire afternoon in unsuccessful pursuit.

The British driver had to settle for second place and, reflecting on his race in McLaren’s post-race analysis, expressed his frustration, stating: “It was a disappointing start, plain and simple. I lost a bit of ground to Max; he wasn’t completely alongside me, but with George on the outside, I didn’t have any room to maneuver. It’s disappointing, but there are still many positive aspects to take from our performance in Barcelona. We came away with a substantial number of points, and our car was exceptional today. I believe we were the fastest out there, so I extend a big thank you to the entire team for their efforts throughout the weekend. Now we’re shifting our focus to Austria and Silverstone, two circuits that I particularly like and where we have a good track record. I’m excited for what’s to come. We’re in a favorable position and performing well every week; I just need to fine-tune some aspects in the upcoming races.”

While Norris shone throughout the weekend in Barcelona, battling at the front of the pack, his teammate Oscar Piastri had a more discreet weekend in the sister car. Piastri had a disappointing qualifying session, failing to set a time in Q3 due to repeated track limit violations on his two fast laps. However, he started ninth on the grid due to Sergio Perez’s three-place penalty, which was incurred in Canada for driving a damaged RB20 on track. After finishing seventh in the race, Piastri reflected on the challenging weekend, stating: “Seventh place wraps up a tough weekend. I believe today’s race had some positive aspects, but overall, it was a demanding few days in Spain. Obviously, qualifying was the biggest source of frustration and made things very challenging for the race. I think we made some smart strategic decisions in an attempt to move up in the rankings, but ultimately, we lacked pace this weekend. However, we will regroup and come back stronger next week in Austria.”

The McLaren team boss, Andrea Stella, did not hide his disappointment at losing the victory in Barcelona. He commented: “When you start in pole position, earned on merit, it is always a bit disheartening not to be able to convert it into a race win. However, the result of today’s race was determined by various factors, especially the fact that we couldn’t maintain our lead in the first corner. However, Lando was cautious, and there was little we could do with Russell gaining momentum through the slipstream and Verstappen securing the inside line in the first corner. From there, we lost some time in the opening stretch, but thanks to the impressive pace of our car and a well-executed strategy, we managed to recover most of that lost time. We were again close to Max at the end of the race. As for Oscar, it is encouraging that we were able to regain some positions and secure vital points for the team in our championship campaign.”

In addition to the challenges on the track, McLaren also faced the setback of a fire that consumed their hospitality center on Saturday. Stella took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all those who provided assistance and support during the incident, stating: “I would like to take this moment to extend my gratitude to all the teams, the FIA, the F1, and the local services who showed tremendous support and offered their assistance when we lost access to the Team Center throughout the race weekend. Their actions were greatly appreciated and demonstrated a strong sense of unity, which I commend and emphasize.”
