Controversial ‘ghost chicane’ adds complexity to Formula E preparation in Portland.

Polêmica ‘chicane fantasma’ acrescenta complexidade à preparação da Fórmula E em Portland.

A significant change was planned for the layout of the Portland circuit of the Formula E for the next double round of the E-Prix. However, this change was abandoned, resulting in the use of the original version of the IndyCar venue again, as Formula E makes its debut in Portland in 2023.

The proposed change involved the insertion of a complex temporary chicane after the final corner, near the pitlane attenuator barrier, leading to the long main straight. Teams were given a track map for preparation work, but the decision to abandon the chicane was announced this morning, after most teams had already completed their preparations.

The introduction of the chicane would have a significant impact on the racing style on the circuit. Last year, the Portland circuit witnessed the first extreme energy-saving race in Formula E, with 403 overtakes. However, the nature of the race was controversial as drivers relied mainly on lift and coast to save energy.

The FIA initially justified the chicane as a solution to alleviate the lift and coast issue and the group racing. However, after analysis and feedback from teams, it was determined that the proposed changes would not be feasible or fully compatible with safety requirements.

Opinions among Formula E drivers regarding the chicane were divergent. Some, like Lucas di Grassi, expressed concerns about the location and potential complications it could create. Others, like Jake Dennis, believed that the extra regeneration offered by the chicane could improve energy management and lead to a less chaotic race.

With the abandonment of the chicane, drivers will either revert to the old data or organize new simulation sessions based on the original track map. The FIA faces challenges in finding the right balance between group races with limited overtaking and fierce competition that rewards skill.

The upcoming races, including the decisive final weekend in London, are expected to feature a mix of energy saving and intense racing. The Portland circuit, which hosts Formula E races for the last time, will continue to present the challenge of lifting and sliding experienced in 2023.

The way the FIA handled the chicane saga was embarrassing and does not reflect the status of Formula E as a world championship. Teams and drivers wasted time and resources preparing for the abandoned layout while also developing their Gen3 Evo packages.

Despite the controversy, the configuration of the Portland track remains a topic of discussion. However, starting from 2025, the Homestead track near Miami will become the new home of Formula E in the United States, replacing Portland.
