His father, racing icon Michael Schumacher, also participated in endurance sports car races in the early 1990s. At Le Mans, he was part of a Mercedes program that included both promising young talents and experienced veterans in the team.

Now, over three decades later, Mick Schumacher finds himself in Le Mans, racing for the Alpine team alongside a mix of young energy and experienced drivers. What sets him apart is that he is on the track, actually competing, instead of just observing Formula 1 events on the sidelines under the watchful eye of Toto Wolff.

For the 2024 season, Schumacher joined the Alpine Hypercar program and will share the Alpine A424 #36 with Nicolas Lapierre and Matthieu Vaxivière.

Before his Le Mans debut, Schumacher expressed his excitement to reporters, stating: “Being part of Alpine, a renowned French team, is a tremendous pleasure. We are incredibly excited about this opportunity. Le Mans is an exceptional event and it’s my first time here, so everything is completely new to me. It’s thrilling to witness the passion people have for racing.”

He continued: “Personally, I can’t wait to experience the race itself and the feeling of pushing myself to the limit for 24 consecutive hours. This will be the biggest challenge I have ever faced. One of the main challenges here is the constant action. There is always traffic and strategic thinking is crucial. You need to ensure that you can successfully complete your part. With so many cars on the track, one wrong move can be extremely costly. This increases the overall challenge.”

When asked about the disparities between Formula 1 and Endurance races, especially the renowned Le Mans race, Schumacher confidently stated: “Honestly, I didn’t find it as difficult as I expected. Our tests in Jerez were much more demanding, in my opinion. I really enjoyed the experience. It offers a different feeling and atmosphere. I believe the race will be incredibly exciting.”

“It’s important to note that Formula 1 and Endurance races are not comparable championships. I approach them differently, and that allows me to adapt my driving style accordingly. I try to incorporate as much knowledge and insight as possible from my previous experiences into my driving here,” explained Schumacher.

In tabloid format, the WEC rookie is benefiting from having Lapierre (who has participated in Le Mans 17 times) on the team. The experienced French driver spoke highly of the rookie, stating: “We spent a lot of time with Mick in his first experience here, as well as other drivers, discussing topics like traffic and slow zones… which can be quite challenging. So, we need to be extremely cautious.”

According to the French veteran, the most challenging moment during the race is in the morning when the sun is shining. He explains: “You feel like you’ve already gone through the night and everything is over. This can lead to a decrease in concentration because driving becomes a little easier in daylight. As a result, you witness many mistakes happening around 5 or 6 in the morning. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain our focus during this period.”

It is worth noting that Mick’s father, Michael, participated in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans, driving a Sauber Mercedes C11 alongside Karl Wendlinger and Fritz Kreutzpointner. They finished fifth overall and set the fastest lap of the race. Now, 33 years later, Mick Schumacher has the opportunity to achieve something his legendary father never did – win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
