Mikkel Jensen from Denmark and Nico Mueller from Switzerland, along with Jean-Eric Vergne from France and Malthe Jakobsen from Denmark, are the drivers of the #93 Peugeot TotalEnergies Peugeot 9X8. They participated in the FIA World Endurance Championship Test at Le Mans, France, from June 7th to 9th, 2024. According to Jean-Marc Finot, team principal and vice-president of Stellantis Motorsport, Peugeot is making progress, as they were one second faster compared to last year’s lap time at Le Mans, despite the car being heavier and less powerful. Finot expressed this during a press interview after the qualifying session for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the pole position contenders for the Hyperpole session were determined. Jean-Eric Vergne qualified the #93 Peugeot in 16th place with a time of 3:26.195, which was over a second faster than his teammate Mikkel Jensen’s time of 3:27.260 from last year’s session. Furthermore, Vergne was 1.760 seconds behind the fastest time set by Dries Vanthoor from BMW, while Jensen was 2.047 seconds behind last year’s time. Peugeot introduced a new car at the 6 Hours of Imola, which is part of this year’s FIA World Endurance Championship. Although the car is still called ‘9X8’, most of its components and aerodynamic surfaces have been redesigned. The main changes include new tire sizes, with 29-inch tires at the front and 34-inch tires at the rear, replacing the previous 31-inch tires. Additionally, a rear wing has been added to rebalance the car after the change in tire dimensions. Jean-Marc Finot mentioned that there is still work to be done on the car’s setup during the free practice sessions to optimize its performance in the race. Although the team is not satisfied with the car’s pace, Finot acknowledged that the competition is fierce in the Hypercar class, with only 1.7 seconds separating them from the leaders and 12 cars within one second of each other. Both Jean-Eric Vergne and his teammate Stoffel Vandoorne set their fastest laps early in the session and were unable to improve them due to traffic issues. Finot admitted that the team struggled with traffic, resulting in Vergne being stopped twice and Vandoorne being stopped once during their fastest laps. However, he emphasized that taking risks is part of the game.
