The Red Bull Racing team, the current champion, was fined 25,000 euros ($26,935) after an incident during the race. Sergio Perez, one of their drivers, was forced to retire to the pits after damaging the rear wing of his car. This happened due to a collision with the barriers at turn six, which caused carbon fiber debris to be scattered on the track. According to Article 26.10 of the sporting regulations, if a driver faces significant mechanical difficulties, they must leave the track as soon as it is safe to do so. The stewards explained that Red Bull admitted during the hearing that they instructed Perez to bring the car back to the pits to avoid a potential safety car situation if he stopped on the track. In addition to the financial penalty, the stewards deemed it necessary to impose a sporting penalty due to the safety implications of the incident. Perez’s recent performances have been disappointing, with retirements in his last two races. Meanwhile, his teammate and three-time Formula 1 world champion, Max Verstappen, has achieved six victories in nine races so far this season. Perez’s troubles continued over the weekend, as he failed to advance beyond the first qualifying session. Reflecting on his race, Perez acknowledged that he had been struggling to maintain momentum in recent weeks and expressed his determination to improve. He also mentioned that his front wing was damaged early in the race when he collided with Pierre Gasly. This compromised his first stint and affected his overall performance. Perez highlighted the difficulty of overtaking on the track, especially when there was only one dry racing line. As the race progressed, the dry line began to widen, but his intermediate tires were already worn out. After switching to new tires and changing the front wing, Perez’s pace improved, but he still faced challenges when trying to overtake other drivers. Regarding the accident that ended his race, Perez took responsibility, stating that he lost control of the car when he entered a wet section of the track at turn six. He was unable to brake and avoid the collision. Perez acknowledged the tough last two weekends he had faced and emphasized the need for the team to regroup and learn from their mistakes. He mentioned that they identified some issues after qualifying that hindered his performance and expressed confidence in his ability to bounce back in the next race in Spain. The article was reported by Alan Baldwin, with additional information from Grand Prix247.
