Power celebrated enthusiastically in the pit lane after securing his first victory in two years. The NTT IndyCar Series held its race at the historic Road America circuit over the weekend, and Team Penske dominated the podium.
Although there were some cautious periods early on that slowed down the action, the rest of the race was incident-free and there was little variation in pit stop strategies.
Once the initial round of pit stops was completed, it was clear that Team Penske would occupy the top positions. In fact, they ended up filling the entire podium.
Leading the trio was Will Power, who finally ended his podium drought. The veteran driver’s last win was in 2022, and since then he had achieved an impressive 13 podium finishes without securing another victory. However, that streak was broken on Sunday with a commanding win that propelled Power to the top of the championship standings.
Josef Newgarden crossed the finish line in second place, just over three seconds behind his teammate. Despite driving his backup car due to a dramatic crash in qualifying, the recent winner of the Indianapolis 500 proved he was more than capable.
Newgarden attributed his second place to a well-executed pit stop strategy, but acknowledged that all Team Penske cars were performing exceptionally well.
Rounding out the podium was Scott McLaughlin, who delivered a solid performance and secured his second podium of the season. This achievement also marked the first time since Sonoma 2017 that Team Penske swept the entire podium.
Alex Palou and Kyle Kirkwood finished in fourth and fifth place respectively, giving Honda their own reasons to be proud of the weekend’s results.
Malheureusement, le débutant Linus Lundqvist, qui a pris le départ en pole position, a vu son leadership éphémère. Son coéquipier Marcus Armstrong est entré en collision avec lui à la sortie du virage 1, entraînant les deux voitures dans un tête-à-queue devant le peloton. Armstrong a reçu une pénalité pour avoir causé la collision, mais les courses des trois pilotes ont été sévèrement affectées avant même qu’ils n’aient complété un tour.
Lundqvist a réussi à se remettre et a terminé à la 12ème place, tandis que Herta a impressionnamment grimpé à la sixième position. Cependant, les deux pilotes ne pouvaient s’empêcher de se demander ce qui aurait pu se passer.
Newgarden a également été impliqué dans l’incident, entrant en contact avec Herta, mais n’a pas reçu de pénalité et n’a pas été significativement affecté par l’incident.
Scott Dixon avait une excellente chance d’être en tête du peloton, mais la décision de son équipe de prolonger son dernier arrêt aux stands n’a pas fonctionné. Sans précautions tardives pour regrouper le peloton, Dixon a dû faire un arrêt supplémentaire aux stands pour refaire le plein dans les derniers tours, terminant à la 21ème place.
Après cinq semaines consécutives sur la piste, les pilotes et les équipes auront enfin une semaine pour se reposer et récupérer. Ensuite, ils se retrouveront pour la prochaine course à Laguna Seca le 23 juin.
