Lando Norris believes that McLaren wasted a potential victory at the Canadian Grand Prix of Formula 1 due to a poorly judged strategy, rather than bad luck. Norris lost the lead of the race when his competitors made a pit stop during the first safety car, one lap before he could do the same. The safety car was deployed just as Norris approached the final chicane, preventing him from making the stop at that moment. Max Verstappen and George Russell were able to take advantage of the situation and overtook Norris when he finally made the pit stop a lap later. Initially, Norris compared this situation to what happened in Miami, where he benefited from the timing and jumped ahead of Verstappen to secure a lead that he maintained until the end of the race. However, in the post-race press conference, Norris changed his mind and believed that McLaren missed out on a second victory in 2024. He felt that the team made a wrong decision by not making the pit stop at the right time and getting stuck behind the safety car. Norris acknowledged that it was not a matter of luck, but rather a mistake on their part. He expressed frustration at not winning and emphasized that McLaren is no longer satisfied with second place. Norris believed that the subsequent decision to keep him on intermediate tires before switching to slicks was the right one, but the damage had already been done. He admitted that McLaren did not do a good enough job and that it was a mistake on their part. Norris pointed out that the situation in Montreal was different from Miami, as Red Bull had already pitted Verstappen before McLaren took advantage of the safety car to pit Norris. He explained that Norris was braking for the chicane when the safety car message appeared, making it difficult for him to pit at that moment. Norris’ change of opinion was likely due to McLaren’s failure to anticipate the timing of the safety car. There was a reasonable window of time between Sargeant’s pit stop and the safety car call, but McLaren could not have called Norris in for fresh intermediate tires in advance. It is understandable that McLaren did not want to give up the track position Norris had fought hard to gain at the start of the race. While there may have been a better strategy available, it was not a glaring mistake on McLaren’s part. Norris acknowledged that McLaren’s high expectations of challenging for victory every weekend make these near-wins even more disappointing.
