Mick Schumacher, the reserve driver for Mercedes AMG F1, took part in the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix in Jeddah on March 6, 2024. Guenther Steiner, former Haas team principal, advised Alpine to focus on finding a “top driver” to replace Esteban Ocon in the 2025 Formula 1 season, instead of considering Schumacher. Ocon will leave Alpine at the end of this season, ensuring at least one new driver in the team. Although Schumacher, who currently competes for Alpine in the World Endurance Championship, is being considered as a potential option, Steiner believes Alpine should prioritize drivers like Carlos Sainz, who have already proven their worth in the F1 market. Steiner’s recommendation is to secure the best available driver, especially as a factory team.
Speculation about Ocon’s future with Alpine has been ongoing since his collision with teammate Pierre Gasly on the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix, for which he was blamed. Former F1 driver Martin Brundle warned Ocon that his reputation for colliding with teammates could deter potential suitors. However, Steiner argues that the tense relationship between Ocon and Gasly made such accidents inevitable. He emphasizes the importance of respect between teammates, even if they are not best friends or have a personal relationship outside of racing. If a driver is not happy with their teammate, Steiner suggests they should find another team instead of causing conflicts that harm the team. The history between Ocon and Gasly, including the intervention of their parents, is not ideal for a harmonious team dynamic. Steiner questions the feasibility of expecting two drivers with a long-standing rivalry to suddenly become seamless teammates.
