Palou dita ritmo na primeira sessão do GP de Detroit da IndyCar

Alex Palou emerges as the favorite in the opening session of the NTT IndyCar Series in downtown Detroit. The Spanish driver showcased his skills on the challenging track, clocking a lap time of 1:01.7210. Palou’s impressive performance adds to his numerous victories, including a title last year. The 27-year-old driver seems to be in great form and is ready to extend his lead in the upcoming races.

Closely following Palou were Pato O’Ward and Colton Herta, with just 0.08 seconds difference between them. Kyle Kirkwood and Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top five, showcasing their ability to navigate the demanding circuit without incidents. The 1.645-mile course has undergone some improvements since its debut, including repaved sections and enhanced safety measures such as Armco barriers.

Despite these improvements, some drivers still faced setbacks during the session. Rookies Christian Rasmussen and Kyffin Simpson spun out and needed assistance to get back on track. Marcus Ericsson had a more serious incident when he collided with the wall, resulting in damage to his suspension. However, he managed to return to the pit lane without external help. Jack Harvey also encountered issues, damaging his car to the point where he couldn’t continue to the pit lane.

Fortunately, the majority of the 27 cars completed the practice session without incidents, accumulating a total of 861 laps. The next practice session will take place early Saturday morning, followed by qualifying in the afternoon.
