Should we reconsider the ‘boring’ Monaco Grand Prix of Formula 1?

Deveríamos reconsiderar o ‘chato’ Grande Prêmio de Mônaco da Fórmula 1?

Logan Sargeant, from the United States, competed for Williams Racing FW46 in the Formula 1 World Championship. On May 26, 2024, the Monaco Grand Prix took place in Monte Carlo, Monaco. It was race day and the event was covered in tabloid format.

Max Verstappen, from Red Bull, expressed his boredom during the race, exclaiming: “This is incredibly boring. I should have brought my pillow.” Despite starting and finishing in sixth place, Verstappen’s feeling reflected the lack of excitement in the Monaco Grand Prix. Surprisingly, all top ten drivers maintained their starting positions throughout the race, a first in Formula 1 history. This raises the question of whether the Monaco Grand Prix has become monotonous.

Although Charles Leclerc, from Ferrari, broke his bad luck streak in Monaco and secured his first home victory, and incidents involving Sergio Perez, Haas, and Alpine occurred on the opening lap, the race overall was uneventful. The narrow and winding streets of Monaco, combined with the large Formula 1 cars, resulted in limited overtaking opportunities. The race, with over 70 laps, overshadowed the thrilling qualifying session held the day before.

Verstappen expressed his desire for changes to the Monaco track layout to increase the excitement of the race. He considered the current race lacking in competition and suggested exploring modifications to enhance the overall experience. Verstappen stated: “If there are possibilities, change some things. Because that will make the excitement even better.” He enjoyed the weekend as a whole, but found the Sunday race boring. Verstappen believed that finding ways to improve the racing experience would be the ideal solution.

When discussing possible changes to the circuit, Verstappen emphasized the need for better overtaking opportunities. He acknowledged that any changes would depend on the specific roads chosen. The layout of the Monaco circuit has remained virtually unchanged over its 70-year history in Formula 1. However, with significant advancements in F1 cars, it may be time to consider adjustments to accommodate the evolving sport.

Christian Horner, the Team Principal of Red Bull Racing, shared similar sentiments regarding the size and weight of current F1 cars in relation to the narrow streets of Monaco. He believed that the dimensions of the cars presented challenges as it was difficult for them to race side by side. Despite these challenges, the historical significance and prestige associated with the Monaco Grand Prix make it a valued event on the Formula 1 calendar.

In conclusion, the Monaco Grand Prix has faced criticism for its lack of excitement and limited overtaking opportunities. Both drivers and team principals have expressed their concerns and suggested possible changes to the track layout. While the race holds immense historical value, it may be necessary to adapt to the ever-evolving nature of Formula 1 cars to ensure a more thrilling and competitive experience for both drivers and spectators.

However, it is clear that the outcome of this race will be largely determined during tomorrow’s qualifying session. We should always be open to finding ways to improve. One option could be to make the cars smaller in the future, although this is unlikely. Alternatively, we could explore the possibility of opening up certain areas of the track to create more overtaking opportunities. Formula 1 and Monaco are aware of this and understand the importance of evolving to ensure the longevity of the race. Currently, it is quite difficult to successfully overtake in these cars.

Monaco is not known for embracing change as a promoter of a Formula 1 race. The city pays significantly less than other Grand Prix venues to host the event, believing itself to be irreplaceable on the calendar. Just last year, Monaco relinquished control of the TV direction to Formula 1 itself, indicating reluctance to keep up with modern hosting standards of a Grand Prix.

In contrast, venues like Monza and Barcelona have invested substantial amounts of money to upgrade their infrastructure according to contemporary Formula 1 requirements, albeit a bit late in the case of Barcelona. Now is the time for Monaco to reconsider its approach. Making small adjustments to the track layout would not be a major challenge and, if it ensures that the most prestigious race in the sport remains on the calendar for the next seventy years, a small compromise would be worth it.
