FIA chief gives significant guidance to Andretti’s Formula 1 team

Chefe da FIA dá orientação significativa para a equipe de Fórmula 1 de Andretti

The recent advice given by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Andretti represents a significant shift in position and reflects a larger change happening behind the scenes. Up to now, Ben Sulayem has been a strong advocate for Andretti’s attempt to enter Formula 1 as a new team. He was the one who initially opened the application process for new teams, much to the Formula One Management’s displeasure. However, in a recent interview, Ben Sulayem advised Andretti to consider purchasing an existing team instead of seeking their own entry. This change in perspective is a notable departure from his previous support for Andretti’s aspirations.

This shift in stance by Ben Sulayem is a significant development. It signals a move from a position of support for Andretti and General Motors to a more cautious approach. It no longer conveys the same level of unwavering support from the FIA that was evident before. This change comes at a time when Andretti is already facing challenges, including the recent announcement of hiring F1 technical director Pat Symonds, which seemed to undermine the FOM’s reasoning for rejecting their entry. Overall, Ben Sulayem’s change in perspective aligns him more closely with the FOM and reflects a desire to improve relations between the regulatory body and the commercial rights holder.

However, this change in perspective does not necessarily significantly alter the current situation. The fact remains that the FIA approved Andretti’s entry, while the FOM rejected it. Ben Sulayem’s change in position may indicate a desire to find a pragmatic solution that satisfies both parties and allows Andretti to enter the sport without disrupting the current 10-team system. But achieving this result is still a distant prospect, and Ben Sulayem’s words alone do not bring it closer. He acknowledges that some teams are facing performance and management issues, emphasizing the importance of having the right teams in Formula 1. He highlights the potential impact of having an American team like Andretti with the support of General Motors and American drivers, but the options for Andretti to acquire an existing team are limited.

Resistance to expansion in Formula 1 is well documented, with teams and the sport itself wanting to preserve the value of the championship. This makes buying an existing team the most viable route for Andretti. However, buying a team in a closed market like Formula 1 is challenging. Ben Sulayem’s change in stance helps ease tensions within the saga, but it does little to advance the project that Andretti was pursuing. It is clear that Andretti’s entry into Formula 1 is becoming increasingly isolated and facing significant obstacles.

In conclusion, the advice given by FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem to Andretti represents a significant change in position. This aligns him more closely with FOM and reflects a desire to find a pragmatic solution that allows Andretti to enter Formula 1 without disrupting existing teams. However, this change does not significantly alter the current situation, and Andretti still faces challenges in acquiring an existing team. Resistance to expansion in Formula 1 and the closed nature of the sport make it difficult to achieve Andretti’s goal. Overall, Ben Sulayem’s change in perspective helps alleviate tensions within the saga, but does little to advance Andretti’s entry into Formula 1.
