George Russell, a driver for Mercedes AMG in Formula 1, shared that he saw a potential opportunity to secure a surprising victory at the Monaco Grand Prix before the race was interrupted due to a red flag. Despite starting in fifth place on the grid, Russell managed to maintain the lead on hard tires while the drivers ahead of him opted for medium tires. Both Russell and his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, planned to extend their stints on the track and take advantage of late opportunities. However, a collision at the back of the grid caused the race to be interrupted, allowing the Ferrari driver to regain third place. The red flag also nullified Mercedes’ alternative race strategy, which Russell believed could result in a victory if circumstances were favorable.
Russell expressed his disappointment with the timing of the red flag, as it prevented Mercedes from executing their planned race strategy. He initially saw the different tire choices as an advantage and had hoped to at least secure a place on the podium, if not a victory. However, the red flag disrupted his plans and turned the race into a procession, with race control dictating the overall pace.
Despite not yet achieving a podium finish in the first eight stages of the championship, Russell considered the Monaco Grand Prix a positive weekend for Mercedes. The team introduced a new front wing design, which Russell tested and used to equal his best result of the season so far. He praised the team’s efforts in bringing improvements to the car and his confidence in using them in Monaco. Russell acknowledged the pressure to perform well and avoid mistakes, but believed that the team’s strong performance in Monaco could be carried into the upcoming races.
