On the other hand, Red Bull’s decision to retain Perez lacks long-term thinking. Although Perez has fit well at Red Bull in previous years, the team has undergone changes that make his extension less suitable. Red Bull is facing uncertainties on and off the track, including the imminent departure of their designer and the development of a new engine. Additionally, there are reports that Max Verstappen has the option to leave the team when he sees fit. While it is unlikely that Verstappen will leave in 2025, Red Bull’s decision to extend Perez’s contract seems to assume that he will stay.

Although Red Bull may not want Perez to challenge Verstappen, his performance deficit diminishes the team’s overall performance potential. Although Verstappen will likely outperform him over a season, Red Bull should consider maximizing their driver pairing instead of avoiding potential challenges.
It is possible that Red Bull’s decision to stick with Perez is an attempt to please Verstappen. However, there have been instances of tension between Verstappen and Perez within the team. After the Monaco Grand Prix, Jos Verstappen, Max’s father, criticized Perez’s performance, indicating that not everyone in Verstappen’s camp sees him as the ideal long-term teammate. If Verstappen were to leave in the future, having Sainz as his teammate would provide Red Bull with a performance safety net. With Perez, there is no guarantee of maintaining competitiveness in the ever-changing driver market.
None of this is intended to diminish Perez’s achievements or his place in Formula 1 history. He would undoubtedly be a valuable asset to a team further down the grid. However, Red Bull’s decision to overlook his age and potential performance decline is risky. Marko has expressed concerns about Perez’s age and long-term implications. There is evidence suggesting that Perez may no longer be at his peak, and it is unlikely that Red Bull can significantly improve his performance. Despite this, the team has chosen to ignore these factors.
