Countless people were already present in the grandstands when an announcement was made for them to seek shelter. Severe weather disturbance caused a delay in the start of the 108th edition of the Indianapolis 500, which was scheduled to begin at 12:45 pm Eastern time. Unfavorable storms arrived in the area at an inconvenient time, as predicted by the weather forecast throughout the week leading up to the race. Rain and lightning are quickly approaching from the west and are expected to reach the Indianapolis Motor Speedway just as the race was about to start. Around 11 am local time, an announcement was broadcasted through the speakers throughout the venue, urging fans to seek shelter under the grandstands to protect themselves from the lightning. The extensive pre-race ceremonies had already been postponed, with teams instructed to keep their cars in the garage area for longer than usual. The garage area will serve as temporary shelter for the cars until the weather front passes and the 125,000 fans who have already entered the track can leave, if necessary, to find shelter. The optimistic expectation is that the storms will move quickly, allowing the track drying process to begin around 3 pm. IndyCar has made arrangements to have a fleet of NASCAR Air Titan track drying vehicles present at the site over the weekend, which should reduce the time needed for track drying from 2.5 hours to approximately 1.5 hours. In an effort to ensure that paying fans receive the full experience, as much of the pre-race ceremonies as possible will be held later in the afternoon. If at least half of the scheduled 200 laps cannot be completed on Sunday, the remaining part of the race will have to be held on Monday afternoon. IndyCar will make every effort to avoid this scenario and aims to declare the race winner on Sunday, if circumstances allow. This page will be regularly updated with more details on the start time of the Indianapolis 500.
