Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea express interest in hosting a Formula 1 race.

Indonésia, Tailândia e Coreia do Sul expressam interesse em sediar corrida de Fórmula 1.

The CEO of Liberty Media, Greg Maffei, recently discussed the possibility of a new Formula 1 race in Southeast Asia. Countries like Indonesia, Thailand, and South Korea have shown interest in hosting a race. With a spot still available on the F1 calendar, rumors of Chicago being added have been dismissed. Instead, Liberty Media is looking to expand to other regions. Thailand’s Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, was present in Imola last weekend, fueling speculation that Bangkok could be home to a new street circuit. Maffei confirmed that Thailand has expressed interest and there is also the possibility of Indonesia or South Korea joining the Chinese Grand Prix. The growth of Formula 1 in China has been significant, partly due to the presence of a Chinese driver. The cultural identity and support of fans and teams from a country play a crucial role in the success of a race. With many cities in Asia expressing interest, Liberty Media is carefully considering the location of their next race. Accessibility and the ability to host a major race are important factors in their decision-making process. A second race in Southeast Asia, alongside China, seems highly likely.

Maffei explained how Formula 1’s decision to take on the role of promoter for the Las Vegas Grand Prix race allowed them to understand the desires of the attending spectators.

“We have made significant changes in the sport,” Maffei stated.

“Previously, it was a business-to-business model where we simply provided the product to the local promoter and they handled the sales.

“But now, with initiatives like F1TV and our own promotions, such as the Las Vegas Grand Prix, we have a better understanding of the fans.

“We are a direct-to-consumer business and prioritize meeting your needs.

“This allows us to gain valuable insights and continuously improve, including in Las Vegas.

“I am excited about our collaboration there and believe it will be a spectacular event. I hope it continues to be as exciting as it was in its first year.”

The inaugural race in Las Vegas last November had a setback when a loose drain cover caused significant damage to Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari during FP1.

However, the race turned out to be exciting, and Maffei hopes to use the lessons learned to create an even more impressive spectacle in the upcoming season.

When asked about his expectations for the 2024 Las Vegas Grand Prix, Maffei stated: “I hope we can have a race almost as good, if not better.

“It would be great to avoid any early track failures. That was a disappointing setback.

“Our test race went very well, and we can only hope for an equally impressive show.

“I believe we will learn to optimize and operate more efficiently, as sometimes our pace can be quite fast.

“I really commend the LVGP team and our partners for their quick efforts in bringing the race to life in just 15 months. It is truly remarkable.

“I am confident that we will be more strategic next time, minimizing disruptions to the community.”
