The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League recently witnessed a rare poor performance from Fernando Alonso in Formula 1. Out of his 387 Grand Prix weekends, this was one of the few where he struggled, finishing in 19th place due to a combination of issues and errors. This concerns Aston Martin, not because it suggests a sudden decline in Alonso’s abilities, but because it highlights his tendency to become bellicose behind the wheel when faced with a futile battle. Although this is not a regular occurrence, it is a recognizable pattern that can be seen in some of his previous races. Aston Martin is worried because this confirms that their upgrade program is not producing the expected results. While the car is getting faster in absolute terms, it is still lagging behind compared to other teams. The car remains difficult to drive, which is clearly frustrating for Alonso. He admits that he has not been driving well in recent races and sometimes shifts his focus to fixing the car’s issues instead of aiming for a higher position. This situation is reminiscent of last season for Aston Martin, when they struggled in the mid-season stages before finally understanding the car and achieving better results. This year, they seem to be facing similar challenges in keeping up with the car’s development. Alonso and his teammate Lance Stroll share similar feelings about the car and agree that the balance needs to be improved. They have been testing different setups and directions to address these issues. Alonso believes that adding downforce to the car has made it more critical and difficult to drive, but they are working to find a solution. Despite the difficulties, Alonso sees the Monaco Grand Prix as an opportunity and is optimistic about the weekend. However, the overall development struggles are a cause for concern for Aston Martin. Alonso is a key indicator of the team’s progress and they need to show signs of improvement to avoid falling behind the rest of the grid. Alonso’s commitment to the team’s long-term future shows his belief in Aston Martin’s potential, but there are valid doubts about his ability to add enough performance to the car.
