Informação surpreendente que está mudando a dinâmica do Indy 500.

In the world of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, an intriguing story has emerged at the Indianapolis 500. Instead of searching for lost treasures, team bosses and technical experts are rummaging through a huge dumpster in search of lost suspension parts. This may seem strange, but it was found that an old pushrod in the suspension proved to be incredibly valuable – until it was banned this year. The manufacturer, Dallara, introduced a new pushrod, but IndyCar allowed teams to continue using the old one for cost-saving reasons. However, most teams blindly switched to the new part, assuming it would be lighter, better designed, or more reliable. Little did they know, Ganassi was the first team to discover that the old pushrod, combined with the current aerodynamic package, actually provided a significant advantage. As the news spread through the paddock, teams began searching for these coveted pushrods, even rummaging through discarded parts. Unfortunately, IndyCar has now banned the use of these pushrods due to safety and quality control concerns. This captivating story demonstrates that even in a series of special chassis like IndyCar, there are still areas where teams are pushing the limits, especially when it comes to the prestigious Indianapolis 500.

Although pushrods have played a role in Penske’s recent success, they are not the only reason for their improved performance. Other factors have contributed to their resurgence, such as the introduction of the aeroscreen in 2020 and the absence of certain components this year. The absence of the hybrid system, which will be implemented in July, has already had an impact on the cars participating in the Indianapolis 500. The car has undergone numerous redesigns in preparation for the hybrid system, affecting not only power but also weight distribution and aerodynamics. These changes have posed challenges for engine manufacturers, especially Honda, which seems to have faced more difficulties this year despite having comparable power to last year. It is speculated that Honda and Chevrolet, who are collaborating on the development of the new hybrid system, have shared information about their respective engines and packages. This collaboration may explain Chevrolet’s performance gains, as they have been able to incorporate some ideas from Honda. Additionally, the Firestone tire selection, favoring harder compounds, has impacted the cars’ grip levels. Although the harder tires have not significantly affected grip, they have presented challenges in terms of activation, which may explain why some drivers have recorded faster lap times on their second lap during qualifying races.

Despite these various factors that affect team performance, Penske managed to find gains that eluded other teams. Comparing the fastest drivers from different teams in the qualifying rounds from 2023 to 2024, we can see the impact of these factors. Ganassi, for example, saw a decrease in speed, with Alex Palou’s average speed dropping by 1.911 mph. Ed Carpenter and Arrow McLaren also experienced slower speeds, although to a lesser extent. On the other hand, AJ Foyt’s drivers, like Santino Ferrucci, only had a marginal decrease in speed. These examples demonstrate that tire selection, engine packaging, and the absence of the old pushrods had a significant impact on team performance, resulting in slower lap times. In contrast, Penske’s Scott McLaughlin managed to break the four-lap pole position record this year, showing the gains they made despite the challenges posed by these factors.
