In the typical style that has become customary, Verstappen once again will occupy his position at the front of the grid in the number one Red Bull car. Instead of Oscar Piastri’s McLaren, it will be Verstappen’s teammate, Lando Norris, who will share the front row with him.
Piastri received a penalty that forced him to start in fifth position, behind the all-red second row. However, this is still a favorable starting position for Piastri in Imola, as he continues to improve with each Grand Prix.
Ferrari introduced significant improvements to their SF-24 for their home race in Imola. Although they performed well in practice sessions, neither Charles Leclerc nor Carlos Sainz were able to match the pace needed for pole position.
Nevertheless, Ferrari’s race pace, strategic decisions, and perhaps a stroke of luck in Imola could put them in contention for the win. McLaren, on the other hand, also looks strong, and Verstappen is expected to be tough to beat as usual. However, Norris proved in Miami that Verstappen can be defeated on merit.
In terms of the overall hierarchy of teams, it seems that Red Bull and Ferrari are progressing compared to the rest of the field, with McLaren’s recent upgrade bringing them closer to Verstappen’s Red Bull than ever before.
Sergio Perez’s performance in qualifying was disappointing, being half a second behind Verstappen’s time in Q2. This disappointing result, being eliminated in Q2 and being beaten by both VCARBs, will not be well received by the Red Bull team. Perez will need to work hard to gain positions from his 11th place starting position, especially considering his teammate’s chances of victory.
Aside from the top five, it is unlikely that anyone else will be able to challenge for victory in the 31st Grand Prix at Imola, unless unforeseen circumstances cause chaos. Even securing a spot on the podium will be a challenge if those starting in the top five positions manage to complete the 63-lap race.
Mercedes, now finding themselves in the middle of the pack with their problematic W15, will struggle to fight for podiums with the pace they currently have. George Russell, starting in sixth place, and Lewis Hamilton, starting in eighth place, will face difficulties. It is a big difference for a team that was once unbeatable.
In contrast, both VCARBs exceeded expectations. Yuki Tsunoda continues to impress in every race, consistently outperforming Daniel Ricciardo. They will start ahead of the Mercedes cars, with Tsunoda in seventh place and Ricciardo in ninth place. It will be an interesting battle to watch.
