Verstappen surpreendido ao igualar recorde de pole position em Imola da Fórmula 1.

Max Verstappen, representing Red Bull Racing, expressed his surprise at achieving an eighth consecutive pole position in the Formula 1 Championship at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Verstappen was unhappy with the handling of his Red Bull RB20 car during practice, as both Ferrari and McLaren led the times. However, the Dutch driver found a better connection with his car during the third practice session and carried that new momentum into qualifying, securing pole position ahead of the McLaren drivers. Verstappen revealed that his team made last-minute adjustments to the car setup, allowing him to set a time of 1:14.726s, narrowly beating Oscar Piastri. Despite the challenges faced throughout the weekend, Verstappen expressed his immense happiness at securing pole position. He admitted he did not expect this result and credited the improvements made to the car setup for his success. Verstappen also praised the Imola circuit, describing it as remarkable and highlighting the thrill of pushing the limits during a qualifying lap. He even mentioned brushing the gravel in the final corner, further emphasizing the intensity of the experience. Verstappen concluded by stating that his adrenaline was still high.

Verstappen remains undefeated in qualifying sessions this season and has now matched Ayrton Senna’s record of eight consecutive pole positions.

“It’s a fantastic start to the year and a particularly special moment,” he commented. “It’s been 30 years since he tragically passed away at this circuit.

“I’m extremely pleased to have taken pole position here, and it’s a fitting tribute to him. He was an extraordinary Formula 1 driver, especially in qualifying.

“It’s a great day for me and the team. I couldn’t be happier.”

Piastri narrowly beat his McLaren teammate, Lando Norris, to secure a spot on the front row, but was disappointed with a small mistake at Rivazza corner that cost him 0.074s.

“I made a small mistake in the last corner, but it’s incredibly challenging to put together a perfect lap here,” he explained.

“I’m really happy with how things have been going so far. I’ve felt comfortable with the car since we took it out on track yesterday.

“I came so close to pole position, but I’m still very pleased. It’s been a while since I’ve been up here, so I’m excited about the progress this weekend.”

McLaren unveiled their updated MCL38 car in Miami two weeks ago, with Norris clinching the win. Piastri hopes the car has the speed to challenge Verstappen.

When asked if he can aim higher tomorrow, Piastri replied: “I believe so. In the past, we might have said no, but now, based on our recent performances, we can confidently say yes.

“Let’s see what we can achieve. We’ve been competitive throughout the weekend. Of course, you can never underestimate Max and Red Bull, as we’ve just seen.

“But I have a strong belief in our abilities. Although it’s not the easiest track to overtake on, I’m confident we can make a positive impact.”
