Max Verstappen and Red Bull recovered from a difficult start to the weekend at Imola in Formula 1, securing pole position in a tight qualifying session. This achievement puts Verstappen on par with Ayrton Senna’s record of eight consecutive pole positions, with the opportunity to break the record in the next race in Monaco. Despite facing difficulties on Friday with an uncooperative RB20, Red Bull’s hard work overnight and adjustments before qualifying paid off for Verstappen. However, Ferraris and McLarens posed a real threat for pole position throughout the qualifying session. Verstappen led Q3 after the first laps, setting a time of 1m14.869s, just 0.073s faster than Lando Norris and 0.147s faster than Charles Leclerc. With his final lap, Verstappen improved his time to 1m14.746s, securing pole position. Oscar Piastri narrowly beat his McLaren teammate Norris to secure a spot on the front row, but his position is under investigation for obstructing Kevin Magnussen in Q1. The challenge from Ferraris for pole position faded on the final lap, with Leclerc finishing over two tenths behind in fourth and Carlos Sainz nearly half a second behind Verstappen. George Russell was best of the rest, finishing just 0.001s behind Sainz in sixth. Yuki Tsunoda, Lewis Hamilton, and Daniel Ricciardo completed the top ten. Sergio Perez, who crashed his Red Bull in FP3, failed to reach Q3, finishing in 11th. Esteban Ocon secured 12th place, while Pierre Gasly had a frustrating day, finishing in 15th. Lance Stroll and Alex Albon finished 13th and 14th respectively, with Fernando Alonso having a tough day and qualifying as the slowest driver. Logan Sargeant had all his competitive laps excluded for exceeding track limits, resulting in him starting from the back. Both Saubers were also eliminated in Q1, with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finishing 16th and 17th respectively. Magnussen, who was 18th fastest, was over a second slower than Hulkenberg in Q1, largely due to encountering Piastri on his final lap.
